American Horror Story is known for being extra -- especially when it comes to hyping up each upcoming installment. Unlike most shows, which premiere only a handful of trailers previewing the new season, American Horror Story goes all out, releasing a dozen or so teasers that hint at thematic elements of the new episodes, often without featuring any actors or footage from the actual series.
Although the upcoming ninth season, American Horror Story: 1984, won't premiere on FX until the fall, the network released the first teaser in April. That means we'll have at least five months of teasers leading up to the slasher-themed new season that we can obsess over and attempt to decipher. Here are all the teasers released so far.
Title: The Woods Description: "Don't put anything past us." Breakdown: The first teaser for Season 9 revealed the title, 1984, and a slasher theme as it showed a young woman running from a knife-wielding man in the woods.
Title: Cast Announcement Description: "To celebrate the first day of filming the NINTH Season of AMERICAN HORROR STORY, here's the official 1984 cast announcement along with some amazing 80s lewks. Enjoy!" Ryan Murphy wrote in the Instagram post that first shared this footage. Breakdown: This video gets extra points for revealing the main cast of 1984 rocking '80s summer camp couture, including appearances by Emma Roberts, Gus Kenworthy, Cody Fern, Leslie GrossmanBillie Lourd, Matthew Morrison, Angelica Ross, and John Carroll Lynch, who appears to be one of the slash-happy villains this season.
Title: Official Trailer Description: "You're all gonna die." Breakdown: Our first real footage of 1984 reveals that Camp Redwood is about to be terrorized by an escaped killer, Mr. Jingles, who had previously attacked the camp years prior.
Title: Camp Redwood Description: "Welcome to Camp Redwood. Good luck leaving alive." Breakdown: The teaserfeatures a group of teens heading to Camp Redwood for some fun in the sun, with a masked, knife-wielding maniac hot on their trail.
Title: Moving In Description: "Always stay together." Breakdown: There's safety in numbers, as one unfortunate camper quickly finds out in this teaser. After two guys arrive at their cabin and choose beds, one of them leaves to go for a walk with a girl, leaving the other alone -- until the killer comes out of hiding, that is.
Title: Laundry Description: "Hung out to dry." Breakdown: After thinking she spotted the silhouette of a killer lurking behind a sheet she had just hung up to dry, a young woman is shocked to discover the man isn't right in front of her... he's right behind her.
Title: Swing Description: "Swing away..." Breakdown: The killer interrupts a lonely-looking young woman's time on a swing and drags her away.
Title: Shower Description: "Keep both eyes open." Breakdown: A young woman (anyone else noticing a trend here) is just trying to relax by enjoying the camp's outdoor shower when the killer cuts her time (and life) short.
Title: Walkman Description: "Fear is music to our ear." Breakdown: Featuring yet another young woman on her own, "Walkman" finds the teaser's star jamming out to some music on the dock at night. That is, until a shadowy figure in the water grabs her legs and drags her in.
Title: Campfire Description: "You haven't heard this campfire story." Breakdown: A group of friends are enjoying a campfire when a young man goes off to get some more wood. Two of his pals scare him as a joke, but it's the killer, who appears with an ax, that gets the last laugh.
Title: Skinny Dipping Description: "This romance is dead in the water." Breakdown: A young man attempts to convince his female friend to join him for a late-night swim when they're startled to discover they're being watched by an ax-wielding assailant.
Title: Bedtime Description: "Take a stab at summer fun." Breakdown: A young couple are getting frisky in bed, much to the chagrin of the woman's bunkmate, when the killer stabs them through the mattress he had been hiding under.
Title: VHS Description: "You might want to look behind you." Breakdown: Two friends are hanging out and watching a scary movie when they're interrupted by a real-life horror story: their friend pounding on the window begging for help before being pulled away by an unseen attacker.
Title: Nightmare Description: "It's not always a nightmare." Breakdown: After waking up from a bad dream, this young woman realizes her nightmare is real as a long-haired killer had been waiting by her bed.
Title: Under the Bed Description: "Try not to scream..." Breakdown: As the ax-wielding murderer strolls through the cabin, a young woman hiding under the bed does her best to stay off his radar.
Title: The Void Description: "The killer knows your moves. Inside and out." Breakdown: After peeking out the door to check the origin of a spooky sound, a young woman is dragged into the darkness.
Title: Parked Description: "Dismissed with a kiss." Breakdown: A couple are getting hot and heavy in a convertible when the killer pops up from the backseat.
Title: Dead Car Description: "Fear can drive you crazy." Breakdown: With the masked killer getting closer, a weeping young woman does her best to get her car to start so she can escape.
Title: Car Ride Description: "Turn around..." Breakdown: After finally starting the car and seemingly getting away from the killer, the same young woman as featured in "Dead Car" soon realizes she isn't out of trouble yet, as the killer jumps onto the hood of her car and tries to stab her through the windshield.
Title: Phone Description: "Out of service." Breakdown: After dragging herself to a pay phone, an injured woman's last life line is cut off when the killer slices through the phone cord.
