Amazing Race's Tim and Danny: The Singing Caught Everybody Off-Guard

The Amazing Race turned into Austrian Idol for a bit on Sunday, when teams had to sing Franz Schubert's "Die Forelle" with the Vienna Boys Choir. Unfortunately for Oklahoma BFFs Tim and Danny, the former's tone-deafness did them in. "I can't sing, I can't speak German, I definitely can't sing German," he tells TVGuide.com. "That's pretty tough." How long did they spend at the musical Roadblock? Find out below. Plus: See what they say they should've done last week with the Double U-Turn.

Amazing Race's Brandon and Adam: It made sense to change Detours
Between last week and this week, did you ever think you'd be tripped up by singing and dancing?
Danny: [Laughs] Never! The two rules of going on The Amazing Race are you have to know stick shift and know how to swim. We didn't even think about singing and dancing. That's one of our big faults right there.
How far behind Ally and Ashley were you?
Danny: Ten, 15 minutes. We actually saw the girls when we got to the maze and we thought they forgot to do the maze and that's why we were trying to be quiet. We thought they were running to the mat without going to the maze and they would have to run back, so we didn't talk to them. We thought we had a shot at the end.
How long did the singing take? It seemed like you were there for a while.
Danny: I was sitting up there waiting and watching everybody else come out. Everybody else at least gave it a go once or twice before Tim even came up the stairs the first time. We were there forever!
What was so difficult about it? The German words? Can you just not sing? Are you tone-deaf?
Tim: It was all of the above! ... I did it in like an hour, which is pretty decent for me, I guess, but not as good as all the other teams.
Your instructor told you to sing like Justin Timberlake.
Tim: Yeah, don't you think I pulled that off pretty well? I'm the German Justin Timberlake. [Laughs] 
Danny: I think that might've been part of the problem. Our instructor was a little out there.
Tim: Yeah, during my first attempt, the music started and I paused. The instructor never told me when to jump into the song. I was a little off to begin with. He taught me how to sing and everything, but he didn't tell me when to jump in with the piano. He's a great guy, very helpful, but I guess it was tough to communicate with him on the main points of what to do.
Do you think the pianist was a harsh judge or do you think the task itself was just hard?
Danny: I think everyone was judged fairly. I think it was just a really tough challenge. Nobody expected it. When they choose you for the show, you never think about singing or dancing. You train to get in shape and stuff. I think it caught everybody off-guard. You'd be surprised at how well the other Tim and Travis did. They have musical experience. Me and Tim took choir in ninth grade and that was it.
Tim: I was actually the lead singer of my third grade class. I don't know what happened there.

Did you consider doing the Fast Forward, especially after Jason and Amy didn't do it?
Danny: After Tim's second try, I really wanted to say, "Screw it! Let's go try that." I was pretty sure we were definitely going to be the last one. No offense, Tim.Tim: No, no, it's fine.Danny: It was rough and it wasn't getting much better. I wanted to say, "Let's go out like this. Let's at least go try." You never know. Maybe we would've gotten there and it would've still been too windy, but I really wanted to go.Did you just think about it or did you discuss it?
Tim: He told me when I was going back down to practice again, "Hey, man, you want to try the Fast Forward?" But I had tunnel vision. I didn't really think about it. I was just like, "Just be quiet. Let me do this." And after being there for, like, 45 minutes, you don't want to waste all that time you took to learn the song. I had already learned the song by then; it was just everything else. But it would've been a lot more fun going out bungee-jumping than singing.You didn't know it happened at the time, but what's your take on Tim and Marie taking Jason and Amy's cab after they saw their bags were out?
Danny: I think it was a smart move from Tim and Marie's standpoint. Jason and Amy's bags weren't in there and the cabbie agreed to take them. Everybody says we're the nice guys, but we probably would've done the exact same thing if we were in that situation. It was fair. Maybe Jay and Amy thought they took their bags out.You can't touch other teams' stuff. 
Tim: Yeah, you're not allowed to mess with other teams' personal belongings. If they're still in the cab, you can't take their cab with their stuff in it. But if the cab driver took them out, then the cab's fair game.
25 unnecessary spin-offs
I don't think most people were expecting you to use the U-Turn last week.
Danny: Well, we weren't expecting to use the U-Turn! ... We were hoping it would be done for us. Everybody had kind of talked about using the U-Turn, like Jay and Amy, and Tim and Marie, except Brandon andAdam. They always said they wouldn't U-Turn anybody. The Afghanimals [Leo and Jamal] and the ice girls — I don't know if they would've U-Turned somebody, but I would guess they would've. It was kind of understood that somebody would U-Turn the Afghanimals. Half of the teams were in front of us, so we were surprised that no one U-Turned them, and we said we would U-Turn them, so we did.You wanted them out, right? Were you upset when they weren't eliminated?
Tim: The idea was for them to be eliminated, but we had no idea where the rest of the teams were when we left the dancing ... and the Afghanimals were our only choice at that point. It was like a security blanket for us. But when we got to the U-Turn, we saw Travis and Nicole, and I think they would've U-Turned the Afghanimals if it wasn't for us. We didn't think about it at the time, but we should've told Travis to U-Turn us even though we already passed the U-Turn, so it would've [been void] and it would've locked up that second spot, and the Afghanimals wouldn't have been able to U-Turn the beards. So had that happened, maybe the beards would still be in it and the Afghanimals would be out.What are you up to now?
