Adele's Father Says He's "Dead to Her"

Everything seems to be working out wonderfully for Adele: She has a newborn son, recently won a Golden Globe, and is scheduled to perform at the Oscars next month. But one person who isn't sharing in her successes is her father, Mark Evans, to whom she hasn't spoken since 2011. Now, after the birth of her son, Evans is trying to repair their relationship.

SAG Awards: Fashion hits and misses

"I've left messages on her phone, I've written to her and I've sent her birthday and Christmas cards but it's like I'm dead to her," Evans told Britain's Daily Mail. "I'm not interested in her celebrity status or her money. I just want my daughter back, and I want to be a proper granddad to the little one."

Evans said he learned of Adele's pregnancy and the baby's name through the media. Though Adele hasn't revealed the name publicly, she was recently photographed wearing a necklace with the name "Angelo," sparking speculation that she's named her son Angelo James. "I'm not sure why she's chosen James, other than a reference to James Bond, and God alone knows where Angelo has come from. It's very LA, isn't it?" Evans told the Mail.

"I just want normality," he continued. "I want to be like any other granddad. I've got mates who I see with their grandchildren and I can't bear to watch. It shows me what I'm missing out on."

SAG Awards: Red carpet arrivals

Evans admits he hasn't been a model father, leaving Adele's mother to raise her on her own when the singer was 3. They lost touch after he had a breakdown in 1999, but reconciled when Adele was 15, the Mail reports, and remained close as Adele found sudden success in recent years. But their current estrangement dates back to an interview Evans gave in 2011. He and Adele were supposed to do an interview together and she had to cancel at the last minute, but he went ahead and did the interview anyway and revealed details of her childhood. Though Evans told the Mail he received positive feedback from Adele's management after the piece ran, Adele herself has cut off all contact — even refusing a visit from him when he showed up at her record company in London.

Evans said he doesn't plan on watching his daughter's performance at the Oscars because it would be too painful. "I'm absolutely gutted she's cut me out of her life," he says.
