A&E has given a 10-episode series order to Carlton Cuse's adaptation of the French series The Returned.

The original series, which is based on the 2004 film Les Revenants, takes place in a small town where people who have died suddenly begin reappearing, coinciding with strange phenomena that begins to occur in the town. The French series airs on Sundance (watch full episodes here), and both versions are unrelated to ABC's back-from-the-dead drama Resurrection, which is based on a novel called The Returned.

Cuse (Lost) and Rielle Tucker (True Blood) will write and executive-produce the series, and casting is set to begin immediately.

"The Returned has the potential to be one of the most compelling drama series on cable, thanks to phenomenal scripts written by Carlton and Raelle," A&E Executive Vice President David McKillop said in a statement.  "We look forward to seeing their vision brought to life on screen."
