Can you tell me how to get to Sesame Street without getting into trouble?

Sesame Street is moving to HBO

Have you heard? Sesame Street is relocating to HBO! This may seem like an odd move for the Sesame Street crew. But a brief stroll down Sesame Street's memory lane reveals scandals that prove the show will be right at home on the premium network.

Sesame Street is no place for children

In 1969, Sesame Street was reportedly marketed as an adults-only show. The Muppets engaged in questionable activities that were perfect for the '70s. On the flip side, these antics weren't quite right for a kids' show. More on that later.

Cookie Monster’s (other) bad habit

One tidbit from the glory days of Sesame Street was that sweets weren't Cookie Monster's only vice. He was also an avid smoker. In some of the first Sesame Street episodes from the late '60s and early '70s, Cookie Monster had a pipe. Puff, puff, pass, Cookie Monster!

Roosevelt Franklin: the black Muppet

Roosevelt Franklin was a black Muppet who taught the geography of Africa, how to avoid drinking poison, and other important things. Parents were concerned that his antics might fall in line with negative stereotypes about black children. They also felt his school room was too detention-esque. He disappeared from the show after 1975.

Bert and Ernie: lovers or friends?

Bert and Ernie's relationship has been vague for years. They love and take care of each other. Bert has no issue walking in on Ernie while he bathes with Rubber Ducky. But are they more than just pals? Sesame Street released a statement that the two are simply best friends after an online petition calling for Bert and Ernie to marry began circulating. That's the official answer. But, in the end, it's between Bert and Ernie.

Katy Perry’s boobs’ duet with Elmo

In 2010, Katy Perry shot a duet scene with Elmo, but concerns arose about her low cut dress, and the segment was pulled from the show. Hate to say it, Elmo, but no one would have noticed you during your duet with Katy Perry.

Chin up, Katy Perry

As a rebuttal to her banned performance with Elmo, Katy Perry appeared on Saturday Night Live wearing a too-tight, low-cut Elmo shirt that put the two reasons for the segment's removal front and center.

Grover is a hippie at heart

The Grover we love is a risk-taker, but in prior iterations he was more of a troublemaker. In the early '70s, Grover hung out with what some might call an unsavory crowd. Slacker hippies of the day were the inspiration for Grover's pals.

Elmo’s sex scandal

OK, truthfully it was the man behind Elmo involved in the scandal. Kevin Clash, who voiced the kid-favorite Muppet, took a leave of absence in 2012. The Emmy-winning entertainer decided to lay low when allegations began to spread about his sexual relationships with underaged males. The charges were thrown out, but his reputation was permanently damaged.

Big Bird learned about death before any of us were ready

Understanding death is troublesome for children and (big) birds alike. When Will Lee, who played Mr. Hooper, passed away in 1982, the Sesame Street writers found a way to explain his disappearance from the show. They featured other adults on the show explaining to Big Bird why Mr. Hooper wasn't coming back. Many parents worried that the subject matter was too deep for kids.

WTF is a Veggie Monster?

To counteract Cookie Monster's not-so-healthy eating habits, Sesame Street writers introduced Veggie Monster. The new Muppet taught kids about better munching options and joined Cookie Monster in a song labeling cookies as a "sometimes snack."

Mahboub the Arab Muppet

Sesame Street's issues aren't restricted to the US version of the show. The Israeli Sesame Street introduced Mahboub, an Arab Muppet (pictured in the center here). Though the intent was to encourage acceptance, the addition did not go over well.

Big Bird vs. Mitt Romney

Mitt Romney, what did Big Bird ever do to you? During his presidential campaign, Romney suggested cutting government spending for PBS. One problem: Sesame Street has aired on PBS for decades. Perhaps this explains Big Bird's interest in new real estate over at HBO.

GNN and Pox News

Sesame Street's play on CNN and Fox News materialized as GNN and Pox News. Oscar appeared as an anchor on GNN: Grouchy News Network. At one point, a GNN viewer called in to complain, threatening to switch to Pox News: "Now that's a trashy news show!" Sesame Street really put the "ouch" in "grouch" on that one.

Kami the HIV-positive Muppet

The South African version of Sesame Street introduced Kami in 2002. Kami was an HIV positive Muppet whose mother died of AIDS. President Bill Clinton and Kami filmed a Unicef-endorsed PSA to bring awareness to the epidemic. It's always exciting when a president visits Sesame Street. But this visit had some parents up in arms.

Sesame Street after dark

In 2011, hackers took over the Sesame Street YouTube page. They replaced the kid-friendly videos with X-rated content. For a moment, children learned something drastically different from the ABCs.
