The Nine (2006)

After Lost became a bona fide hit for ABC, the networks stopped being scared of serialization, hence the flooding of the market of shows like The Nine, which told the story of a mysterious bank robbery from many perspectives. Sadly, not all serialized series are created equal, and ABC canceled the show after 13 episodes.

Jericho (2006)

Set in the aftermath of a nuclear attack on U.S. soil, this postapocalyptic drama gained a small, vocal groups of devotees who, in the wake of the endless deconstruction of and commentary about Lost, made their voices heard. When CBS decided to cancel the show, an intricate fan campaign that involved sending peanuts to the network actually worked, and the Eye green-lit a second, seven-episode season.

Cloverfield (2008)

Produced by Lost founding father J.J. Abrams, this film succeeded largely on the back of an elaborate viral marketing campaign that hinted at, but never revealed the monster that was attacking New York City. Remember how we first met the Man in Black's smoky alter ego? An unseen force ripped the pilot from the cockpit of Oceanic 815 and dismembered him.

Fringe (2008)

Executive producer J.J. Abrams has emphasized that this spooky Fox show is not sci-fi, but rather just sci. Legitimate science plays as large a role on this show as it does on Lost. Sure, there are times when it feels like you need an advanced degree in physics, but for the most part it's appreciated.

Star Trek (2009)

J.J. Abrams may have started as a screenwriter, but until Lost, his genius resided mostly on television. That changed when he was handed the keys toone the world's most beloved sci-fi franchises, to which he applied his signature cinematic sheen.

FlashForward (2009)

A show about the entire world losing consciousness simultaneously seemed to be the perfect heir apparent to a show about a plane ripped from the sky by malevolent forces. Both shows imply a wide-ranging conspiracy theory is at work. (Malevolent forces at ABC canceled FlashForward in May.)

V (2009)

This remake of the campy 1980s miniseries kicks up the action quotient with a feisty heroine in Lost alum Elizabeth Mitchell. Just like on Mitchell's former series, there's a war brewing, and distinguishing the good guys from the bad guys is increasingly difficult.

The Vampire Diaries (2009)

Ian Somerhalder, who played the doomed Boone on Lost, is a complicated antihero who balances his inherent nature as a vampire with a nagging desire to do the right thing. Call him Sawyer with fangs.

Hawaii Five-O (2010)

Thirty years after the original went off the air, CBS is reviving the classic cop series starring Moonlight's Alex O'Loughlin and Lost's Daniel Dae Kim. Like the original, it'll be filmed in Hawaii, a location suddenly made fashionable again by ABC's innovative island drama.

Undercovers (2010)

J.J. Abrams is launching a new spy series in the fall on NBC, starring relative unknowns Boris Kodjoe and Gugu Mbatha-Raw as married operatives. Think back to the pilot episode of Lost, when new faces Evangeline Lilly, Jorge Garcia and countless others became stars overnight.
