The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Release date: May 2 The summer movie season swung into high gear with Spidey! Shailene Woodley was originally cast as Mary Jane, but her scenes were cut from the film.

Godzilla

Release date: May 16 Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Bryan Cranston star in this reboot of the classic sci-fi franchise about a monster who overtakes Tokyo. Although the 1998 film earned disastrous reviews and underwhelming ticket sales, this version features an impressive ensemble that also includes indie darling Elizabeth Olsen, as well as Oscar winner Juliette Binoche, and Oscar nominees Sally Hawkins, David Strathairn and Ken Watanbe.

X-Men: Days of Future Past

Release date:May 23 Combining the stars of both the original X-Men trilogy and First Class, Future Past follows 2023 Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) as he travels back in time to 1973 to prevent a dark future where sentinel robots are exterminating mutants. To do so, Wolverine must unite all the mutants to stop the assassination of Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage), the creator of the Sentinels.

A Million Ways to Die in the West

Release date:May 30 In this madcap comedy set in 19th-century Arizona, mild-mannered sheep farmer Albert (Family Guy and Ted creator Seth MacFarlane) has been branded a coward after he backed out of a duel, but the alluring Anna (Charlize Theron) just may help him find his bravery. The film also stars Liam Neeson, How I Met Your Mother's Neil Patrick Harris, Giovanni Ribisi and funny lady Sarah Silverman.

Maleficent

Release date:May 30 Who says Disney princesses get all the fun? Angelina Jolie returns to the big screen after a four-year hiatus as the titular villainess from Sleeping Beauty. The origin story will trace how the high-cheekboned fairy became the Mistress of All Evil and placed that curse on Princess Aurora. Elle Fanning co-stars as Aurora, with Jolie's 5-year-old daughter Vivienne playing a younger version of the princess.

The Fault in Our Stars

Release date: June 6 Based on the best-selling book by John Green, the heartbreaking, triple-hanky tearjerker stars Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort as offbeat teens who fall in love after meeting at a cancer support group. This, of course, isn't the first time the two has worked together: They star in the Divergent series… as siblings.

Edge of Tomorrow

Release date: June 6 It's Groundhog Day with aliens! Based on the Japanese novel All You Need Is Kill, the action flick stars Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt as military officers defending Earth against an alien invasion. But every time they die trying, the day resets itself. Fun fact: The metal suits they wear weigh up to 100 pounds!

22 Jump Street

Release date: June 13 Even though Deputy Chief Hardy (Nick Offerman) "hoped never to see [them] again," Jenko (Channing Tatum) and Schmidt (Jonah Hill) are back, this time going undercover in college to track down a new drug. That's not the only new location: Their home base has moved across the street to 22 Jump Street! Ice Cube, Dave Franco, Nick Offerman and Rob Riggle reprise their roles as well.

How to Train Your Dragon 2

Release date:June 13 Set five years after the events of the first film, Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and Toothless have grown up beyond the mere dragon races that are so popular on Berk. The pair instead explores new lands to find new dragon species and even encounters a mysterious rider who turns out to be Hiccup's long-lost mom Valka (Cate Blanchett). They'll need all the help they can get against Drago the dragon hunter (Djimon Hounsou) and a dragon trapper who sells dragons to Drago.

Transformers: Age of Extinction

Release date:June 27 Four years after the invasion and destruction of Chicago, mechanic Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg) and his teenage daughter (Bates Motel's Nicola Peltz) stumble upon the wreckage of what once was Optimus Prime. Everyone — from the Transformers themselves to an evil human government agency — is very interested in this discovery, and the fallout could spell the world's extinction. Speaking of extinct, there are also dinosaurs involved, or to be more precise, dinobots! Eat your heart out, Godzilla! The film also stars Kelsey Grammer, Stanley Tucci, Titus Welliver, Sophia Myles and four lucky folks who were cast after winning the reality TV show Transformers 4 Chinese Actors Talent Search Reality Show.

Release date: July 2 After totaling her car, getting fired, and discovering that her husband's having an affair with their neighbor — all in the span of a day — Tammy (Melissa McCarthy) decides to hit the road. But without the money or means to finance a solo road trip, Tammy is forced to enlist her foul-mouthed, hard-drinking grandmother Pearl (Susan Sarandon) to ride shotgun. Directed by McCarthy's real-life husband Ben Falcone, the comedy's supporting cast includes Kathy Bates, Allison Janney, Dan Aykroyd, Sandra Oh and Toni Collette.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Release date: July 11 The highly anticipated sequel to 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes once again pits humans against their primate predecessors to determine which will be the dominant species on Earth. The genetically advanced apes are once again led by Caesar (Andy Serkis), while Gary Oldman, Jason Clarke and Keri Russell are heading up Team Homo Sapiens — survivors of a deadly virus unleashed a decade prior — in this installment.

Boyhood

Release date: July 11 You know how filmmakers say, "This move took 12 years to get to the screen"? That is literally the case for Boyhood. Richard Linklater's audacious coming-of-age drama follows a divorced couple (Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette) and their son Mason (Ellar Coltrane) over 12 years — and it was filmed intermittently over the same period of time to capture Coltrane's maturation. The actor was 7 years old when he was hired in 2002 and will turn 20 this summer.

Jupiter Ascending

Release date: July 18 A month after reteaming with Jonah Hill on 22 Jump Street, Channing Tatum returns to the big screen in this sci-fi space opera from The Matrix writers and directors The Wachowskis. The film also stars Mila Kunis as Jupiter Jones, a down-on-her-luck janitor (no, really) who is informed by an interplanetary warrior (Tatum) that her genetic signature makes her royalty and heir to Earth. Game of Thrones alum Sean Bean co-stars as a Han Solo-type character.

Hercules

Release date:July 25 Not to be confused with Hercules: The Legend Begins, starring Kellan Lutz, Hercules features The Rock as the titular hero who takes up arms against a brutal warlord to help the King of Thrace and his daughter. The film, directed by Brett Ratner, is based on the graphic novel Hercules: The Tracian Wars.

Sex Tape

Release date:July 25 Bad Teacher co-stars Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel reunite to play a married couple who try to spice up their sex life by making a sex tape. Things get complicated when they realize they've sent it out to every contact on their cloud. Damn, technology! Rob Corddry, Ellie Kemper, Jack Black and Rob Lowe co-star.

Get On Up

Release date: Aug. 1 Produced by Mick Jagger, this biopic follows the life of another member of Rock 'n' Roll royalty: James Brown. Stepping into the Godfather of Soul's dancing shoes is Chadwick Boseman, who played Jackie Robinson in last year's 42. The film co-stars True Blood's Nelsan Ellis, The Walking Dead's Lennie James, Cougar Town's Josh Hopkins, and The Help co-stars Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer.

Guardians of the Galaxy

Release date:Aug. 1 Based on Marvel comics, Guardians is about an unlikely group of extraterrestrial misfits on the run from the law after stealing an orb. When Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) discovers the true power of the orb, he must rally his former rivals to fight for the galaxy's fate. The ensemble cast also includes Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket Raccoon, Vin Diesel as the tree-man Groot and Zoe Saldana as Gamora.

Lucy

Release date: Aug. 8 And you thought Black Widow was badass. Scarlett Johansson stars in Luc Besson's latest femme fatale sci-fi thriller as the titular character, a drug mule who accidentally ingests the drug she's carrying. As a result, she gains superhuman powers and intelligence. Morgan Freeman co-stars as a professor who helps Lucy harness her powers.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Release date: Aug. 8 The Heroes in a Half-Shell are back! New York City is facing dark times, with Shredder (William Fichter) and his Foot Soldiers running the show, so everyone's favorite reptilian warriors are needed to save the day. Helping them out are reporter April O'Neil (Megan Fox) and her cameraman, Vern Fenwick (Will Arnett). Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Vanilla Ice will be making an appearance this time around.

The Giver

Release date: Aug. 15 Based on the award-winning, highly controversial book about a futuristic, dystopian society that has eliminated pain and suffering, the film adaptation stars Oscar winners Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges (as The Giver), as well as True Blood's Alexander Skarsgard, Shameless' Cameron Monaghan, Katie Holmes and Taylor Swift (yes, Taylor Swift), who plays The Giver's daughter.

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For

Release date: Aug. 22 Based on the second book in the Sin City series, the sequel continues the neo-noir crime thriller's tales and features four plots, including two original ones. The impressive cast includes returning players Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, Mickey Rourke and Bruce Willis. Newcomers include Eva Green, Josh Brolin, Ray Liotta and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller return to co-direct.
