Need something new to watch? Go on a Netflix deep dive with these series
This Canadian sci-fi drama stars former child star Jennette McCurdy as Wiley Day, the sharp-tongued pregnant daughter of a minister in the small town of Pretty Lake. Despite its lovely name, the town is actually battling a disease that has mysteriously killed off everyone over the age of 21, leaving the surviving residents to fend for themselves while trapped in a quarantine. Unlike most Netflix shows, this show's six-episode first season was released one episode at a time. But you can binge the entire first season before Season 2 drops next year.
Not to be confused with the Showtime drama The Borgias, this international production from Oz creator Tom Fontana tracks the Borgia family's rise to power during the Renaissance and the single-minded drive of Rodrigo Borgia (The Wire's John Doman) to become Pope. All three seasons are available to stream now.
Forget cooking competitions! This mouth-watering documentary series from director David Gelb takes viewers inside the kitchens of world-renowned chefs in an effort to change the way people think about food. Each episode profiles a different chef, and the first season features such culinary masters as Dan Barber (New York's Blue Hill Restaurant), Massimo Bottura (Osteria Francescana in Modena, Italy) and Ben Shewry (Attica Restaurant in Melbourne, Australia). Bon appetit!
Netflix's first Spanish-language series is set and filmed entirely in Mexico, and tells the story of two billionaire siblings (Luis Gerardo Méndez and Mariana Trevino) who battle each other to gain control of the family-owned soccer team that they've inherited after their father's death. While not afraid to mix hilarious comedy with dramatic moments, the show, which features action on and off the soccer pitch, never veers into telenovela territory.
If you want to get a feel for Jamie Dornan's acting chops, don't look to Fifty Shades of Grey. Instead, check out this addictive Irish crime drama, in which Dornan plays Paul Spector, a bereavement counselor/family man by day, serial killer by night, who's targeting women in Belfast. Gillian Anderson co-stars as the police superintendent who's investigating the crimes - and honing in on Paul, even as he becomes increasingly obsessed with her. The first two seasons are available to stream.
Who says there aren't any roles for women of a certain age in Hollywood? Netflix's original comedy stars Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda as frenemies who become roommates and confidantes after their husbands (Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston) reveal that they're gay - and are divorcing their wives to marry each other. At 77 and 76, respectively, Fonda and Tomlin are clearly having the time of their lives in the show, a promising entry in Netflix's original comedy lineup.
This addictive, dark British drama follows police sergeant Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire), who becomes obsessed with bringing her daughter's rapist to justice after her daughter commits suicide. Along the way, Catherine discovers that her daughter's attacker (and the father of her Catherine's 8-year-old grandson) is also involved in a kidnapping plot. Our biggest complaint about the misnomered show? That Season 2 won't even air in Britain until next year.
Set in China in the 13th century, Netflix's historical epic stars Lorenzo Richelmy as the titular explorer, chronicling Polo's early expeditions under Kublai Khan (Benedict Wong). Netflix renewed the series shortly after it premiered for a 10-episode second season, which will likely premiere at the end of this year. It's certainly no Game of Thrones, but who doesn't love a sexy period piece?
This drama series chronicles the life and crimes of Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar and the Medellin Cartel. Wagner Moura stars as Escobar, while Boyd Holbrook and Pedro Pascal play a pair of DEA Agents who gets sucked into a bloody war that spreads over two decades and claims thousands of lives.
Think of it as Boardwalk Empire across the pond. Set in Birmingham, England in the aftermath of World War I, this drama stars Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby, the leader of the titular gang, and the series tracks the mobsters as they spread their empire. Sam Neill and Tom Hardy also star.
Yes, the name is awful, but just give this one a shot. This British sitcom stars Johnny Flynn as Dylan, an inept romantic who, after being diagnosed with chlamydia, must contact all his previous lovers to inform them he has the disease. Most of the show is told in flashback, as Dylan recounts many of his embarrassing encounters with the women in his past. Daniel Ings and Antonia Thomas co-star as Dylan's best friends.
This mind-bending thriller from Lana and Andy Wachowski (The Matrix) and J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5) tells the story of eight strangers from around the globe who, after experiencing a violent vision, learn they have the ability to connect with one another's thoughts and actions. As they use their communal experience to try and solve the mystery of what's happened to them, they must also evade another "sensate" who is trying to hunt them down. Featuring an international cast and shot all over the world, this one is a visual feast.
Want a complex crime drama to scratch your True Detective itch? Look no further than this four-part miniseries, which uses a nonlinear narrative to explore a series of shootings perpetrated by a local handyman (Sean Harris). Rory Kinnear stars as a newspaper reporter who returns to his hometown to try to uncover why the tragedy took place and how it impacted the community.
Like Orange Is the New Black? Then you'll love this gritty Australian drama set in a women's prison. (Some people might even say that it's actually better than Netflix's standout show.) Piper's transformation from naïve newbie to hardhearted alpha dog has got nothing on what prison does to Wentworth's Bea Smith (Danielle Cormack), who lands behind bars after attempting to murder her abusive husband. In addition to stellar performances and compelling plot-lines, Season 1 of Wentworth also has a killer whodunnit to boot, after the prison's warden is killed during a riot in the early episodes. The answer will leave you reeling - and completely hooked. The first two seasons are available on Netflix, while Season 3 has already aired in Oz.
