Episode Detail: Tasmania: Land of the Devils - Living Edens
Tasmania, off Australia's southeastern coast, has jungles that get snow and is home to “creatures unique in all the world,” says narrator Linda Hunt. Tasmanian animals seen here include duck-billed platypuses, echidnas, quolls, wombats and wallabies. Underwater (amid 150-foot kelp forests) are big-bellied seahorses (the males have especially big bellies: it is they who give birth). Then there are those nasty Tasmanian devils, ill-tempered marsupial carnivores, one family of which is followed for a year. How nasty are they? Their courting, Hunt says, is “ritualized combat.”
