  • Ask Matt | 11/16/2007
I am going to preface my question by trying to establish a little street cred. My favorite shows include Veronica Mars, Friday Night Lights, Battlestar Galactica, The Sopranos and The Wire. While I have enjoyed new shows like Dirty Sexy Money and Chuck, there has been one show, to my big surprise, that has become my favorite: Moonlight. I know, the pilot was horrible. I originally checked it out to see alums from Veronica Mars and Alias, but I have stayed because of Alex O'Loughlin. I think he . read more

I had a chance to watch the pilots for both Moonlight and Reaper. I'm a big Supernatural fan, and these ghost/vampire genre shows, when done well, are a lot of fun. To me, one of these shows demonstrates how you do it well, and one demonstrates how you do it badly. Let's start with the good: I really enjoy Reaper. The stars are likable, the writing is fun, and it genuinely made me laugh. It obviously isn't taking itself too seriously, but the effects are still nice and flashy, and let's face ... read more
  • Portia and Rosie Nip/Tuck'd, More Casting News | Today's News: Our Take | 6/27/2007
There's a run on lesbians at FX's Nip /Tuck. On the heels of Access Hollywood's report that Rosie O'Donnell will reprise her role of lottery winner Dawn Budge for several episodes this season comes word that Arrested Development alumna (and GF of Ellen DeGeneres) Portia de Rossi will play a manipulative (and gay at that) mom whose teen daughter wants to go under the knife. Also, says the Hollywood Reporter, Huff's Oliver Platt (not a lesbian) will appear in five episodes as the producer of a TV show on which Sean and Christian are consultants. In other casting news, Sophia Myles will return to her Underworld: Evolution roots, replacing Shannon Lucio as the love interest for Alex O'Laughlin's vampire in the new CBS drama Moonlight. read more
  • February 11, 2007: Dracula | Masterpiece Theatre | 2/12/2007
Some weeks, Masterpiece Theatre makes it seem like there are only a handful of masterpieces the world over. How many classic novels are out there and available to adapt, yet Masterpiece chooses to do Dracula, again, as if it’s never been done before? Meanwhile, there are hundreds of amazing, as-yet-never-adapted samples of great literature in the world, just sitting around waiting for our attention. That said, this version of Bram Stoker’s beloved favorite wasn’t too shabby. The count, played by Marc Warren (Band of Brothers), was portrayed as a relatively likable guy — old, hunched and with a bad dermatological disorder, true, but not all that creepy, and with not too overwhelming a sense of evil about him. Gary Oldman’s Dracula fairly reeked of evil; Warren’s merely needed a haircut and a manicure. (Definitely a manicure — oof.)That’s until he arrived in England, of course. That crate, those bugs crawling through his eye sockets… never... read more
