  • Moonlight Is Still Dead — What's Next? | Today's News: Our Take | 6/24/2008
Not to beat a dead vampire, but despite all the last-ditch efforts — by the CW, TNT, DirecTV — Moonlight is actually dead, according to the A HREF="http://www.thrfeed.com/2008/06/moonlight-is-de.htmlHollywood Reporter. Their source says the sets have been dismantled, and the show's soundstage will soon be occupied by Simon Baker's new drama The Mentalist.Although I wasn't a regular viewer of Moonlight, I am sad for its passing, since it's nice when a show generates such a devoted fan base. Let's all look toward the future though. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, star of the recently canceled New Amsterdam, has already landed a new pilot at Fox. Where will you like to see Moonlight stars Alex O'Loughlin, Sophia Myles and Jason Dohring show up next?A Dohring-Kristen Bell reunion on Heroes seems inevitable. Myles might make a dangerous addition to Mad Men's stable of lethal beauties. And call me crazy, but when I see O'Loughlin, I immediately think: "Widmore henchman" on Lost. Got any ... read more
  • Finale Fever: The Critic's Notebook | Matt Roush | 5/19/2008
As the season rushes to a close, you win some, you lose some. Take Steve Carell, who got a bonus in Thursday’s finale of The Office (one of the rare hour-long episodes that didn’t wear out its welcome) with the arrival of Amy Ryan as new HR chief Holly. I’ll miss Toby, but for as long as she stays, she’s terrific. Two nights later, however, Carell presided over a miserably and all-too-typically unfunny season finale of Saturday Night Live—sparked only by two cameos by John McCain, spoofing his age (“the oldness it takes to protect America, to honor her, love her and tell her about what cute things the cat did”) and then during Weekend Update, satirically urging the Democrats: “Do not under any circumstances pick a candidate too soon.” When SNL sticks to politics, it’s generally pretty sharp. Otherwise, the eyes glaze, and not just because it’s past midnight. (Did enjoy Ricky Gervais’ droll bit, lording it over the American O... read more
  • I am going to preface my ... | Matt Roush | 11/16/2007
Question: I am going to preface my question by trying to establish a little street cred. My favorite shows include Veronica Mars, Friday Night Lights, Battlestar Galactica, The Sopranos and The Wire. While I have enjoyed new shows like Dirty Sexy Money and Chuck, there has been one show, to my big surprise, that has become my favorite: Moonlight. I know, the pilot was horrible. I originally checked it out to see alums from Veronica Mars and Alias, but I have stayed because of Alex O'Loughlin. I think he has created a really interesting, layered character, and the show's mythology and character development are really starting to take off. It's a fun guilty pleasure. It's not award-winning TV, but it's a lot of fun with a very charismatic lead. I think critics should give it a second chance. It's the first time I have watched anything on CBS in, like, 10 years. Any news on the prospects of this show given the strike? Answer: First off, you don't have to justify your enjoyment of any TV show ... read more
  • I had a chance to watch the ... | Matt Roush | 10/15/2007
Question: I had a chance to watch the pilots for both Moonlight and Reaper. I'm a big Supernatural fan, and these ghost/vampire genre shows, when done well, are a lot of fun. To me, one of these shows demonstrates how you do it well, and one demonstrates how you do it badly. Let's start with the good: I really enjoy Reaper. The stars are likable, the writing is fun, and it genuinely made me laugh. It obviously isn't taking itself too seriously, but the effects are still nice and flashy, and let's face it: You couldn't ask for a more charming Satan than Ray Wise. I hope he gets more screen time. The creators obviously have a clear vision that the look, the music and the story all contribute to. I'll definitely keep tuning in. Now on to Moonlight — yikes! First of all, that voice-over. We get it, you're an angsty vampire. Shut up, already! I think the excessive VO makes the bad writing even worse. Because the writing is bad. So full of clichés! I wanted to laugh at the overly serious ... read more
  • Portia and Rosie Nip/Tuck'd, More Casting News | Today's News: Our Take | 6/27/2007
There's a run on lesbians at FX's Nip /Tuck. On the heels of Access Hollywood's report that Rosie O'Donnell will reprise her role of lottery winner Dawn Budge for several episodes this season comes word that Arrested Development alumna (and GF of Ellen DeGeneres) Portia de Rossi will play a manipulative (and gay at that) mom whose teen daughter wants to go under the knife. Also, says the Hollywood Reporter, Huff's Oliver Platt (not a lesbian) will appear in five episodes as the producer of a TV show on which Sean and Christian are consultants. In other casting news, Sophia Myles will return to her Underworld: Evolution roots, replacing Shannon Lucio as the love interest for Alex O'Laughlin's vampire in the new CBS drama Moonlight. read more
