Fox's Prison Break wrapped up its four-year run (and run, and run, and run...) on Friday night, as Michael finally decided into whose hands he could entrust Scylla. Prison Break fans, prepare to seriously lose your heads. Sarah Wayne Callies — whose rather ugly contract dispute with producers led to her apparent decapitation last October — is returning next season. Full-time. As Dr. Sara Tancredi. Head and all. Seriously.How? Why? When? WTF?! All legitimate questions. Good thing I just hung up with Mr. Answer Man (aka executive producer Matt Olmstead). So... I take it that wasn't Sara's head in that box....Matt Olmstead: Yeah, that wasn't.But initially it was supposed to be her head. What changed?Olmstead: What changed was.... once we realized that the emotional hook of Season 3 was going to be the death of Sara, when we didn't get the actress to do it, as soon as we wrote it and shot it, we realized that there was actually a way she could still be alive. Question: I'm not even a Grey's Anatomy watcher, but it was the star power that drew me to the backdoor pilot of Private Practice. I am very disappointed in the recasting of Merrin Dungey, who I thought was just fine when she played Naomi. Audra McDonald does take things too far. As for Amy Brenneman and Paul Adelstein, they are brilliant. I too remember his creepiness on Prison Break, especially his torturing Sarah Wayne Callies last year. His hidden depth in Practice is really great. I enjoy seeing how his love for kids and his work opens him up, and he and Amy have a better shot than Tim Daly and Kate Walsh at the "untouched chemistry" card. I've found myself in situations similar to what his character is struggling with, and it's written perfectly. The nervousness, the desire to not ruin the friendship and the feelings of inadequacy with someone who's having trouble letting go of an ex. It's good stuff, and if they kicked up Violet's interest in Cooper and then hit pause, it would ... read more

Question: What do you make of Sarah Wayne Callies' departure from Prison Break? Would a new TV series be reluctant to cast an actor who had made it difficult to wrap up a storyline on their previous show? Answer: My glib response when this subject comes up is to say: Sara (the character) and Sarah (the actor) are the lucky ones, to be well rid of this increasingly ridiculous (and nowadays disgustingly sweaty) series. But seriously, I doubt the actress will suffer much for opting for motherhood over work at this point in her and the show's life. I'm betting she's as surprised as anyone that Prison Break is still around. Michael Ausiello has tracked this situation exhaustively, so I'll beg off weighing in on the details of the negotiations. I did, however, think the way the show disposed of the character was characteristically tasteless, clumsy and obvious ... read more
