ABC Cuts Development Slate by a Third | WGA Post-Strike Watch: News About Returning Shows | 1/25/2008
ABC is the latest network to trim its development slate for the 2008-09 season, as a result of the WGA strike. ABC on Thursday released 35-40 scripts — one-third of its slate and the largest cut of any network. Dancing with the Stars cohost Samantha Harris welcomed her and husband Michael Hess' first child, a daughter named Josselyn, on Sunday morning, E! reports. Harris' DWTS replacement will be introduced on Monday night's season premiere, an ABC rep tells TVGuide.com. (My money is on Season 1 champion Kelly Monaco). UPDATE: Another champ, Drew Lachey, got the gig instead.... Ugly Betty producer Salma Hayek and her fiancé, François Henri Pinault, over the weekend became the parents of a baby girl named Valentina Paloma Pinault. No other details were released.... Jack Black has signed on to star in and produce The Lost Adventures of Stone Perlmutter Jr. for Universal Studios. In the mockumentary, he'll play a late-'70s Indiana Jones type... only tubby and a bit potty-mouthed. Ill-fated Soprano Michael Imperioli has been cast as the detective in Peter Jackson's DreamWorks adaptation of the best-seller The Lovely Bones. Stanley Tucci has also come on board as the killer. Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Animation have announced the release date of the fourth Shrek movie: May 21, 2010. Gosh, that's so far away. If only they'd do something to remind us occasionally as opening day draws nearer. Salma Hayek's new MGM-based production company with a Latin flair, Ventanazul, is pursuing George Lopez to cowrite, produce and star in one of their inaugural projects. read more

Remember how Charlie Brown used to end up on his back every time he went to kick the football after Lucy pulled it away? Well, that was me, in the pre-dawn of Thursday morning at the TV Academy building in North Hollywood, as the first Emmy category (for best drama series) was read aloud. Amid a gaggle of impatient media crews and anxious publicists, I once again felt sucker-punched by the cluelessly inexplicable whims of the Emmy nomination process. (Go here for a list of nominees.)The football analogy applies because, once again, the Emmy system dropped the ball, failing to acknowledge NBC’s critically worshiped freshman underdog Friday Night Lights, instead finding room for ABC’s cartoonishly lurid freak show Boston Legal (on the basis, so I hear, of a rare detour into quality with a post-Katrina episode). A chagrined Academy source tells me that Friday Night Lights came close, but speculated that it may have flown too far under the radar in a way overcrowded field.... read more

Also on board are Andy Garcia (as a German shepherd), George Lopez (as a macho pooch with eyes for Chloe) and Salma Hayek.... The red-hot Frank Langella will star with Elliott Gould in On the Hook, a thriller about a corporate whistleblower and the PI who protects him from killers.... Flags of Our Fathers' Jesse Bradford will star in The Echo, a remake of the Filipino thriller Sigaw. read more
