Downey Jr. to Fight More Crime as Sherlock Holmes | Movie News | 7/10/2008
Making his first professional move since trampling box offices as Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. has taken the role of Sherlock Holmes in the upcoming, eponymous drama from Warner Bros. Guy Ritchie (aka Mrs. Madonna) will direct, leaving fingers crossed we'll get some Lock, Stock-style grit and shoot-em-up action. If the movie sounds familiar, it's because it is: Columbia Pictures is putting together a comedic take on the classic tale with Sacha Baron Cohen and Will Ferrell — at least, we're assuming it will be a comedy.Shooting for Downey's crime-solving movie will kick off in October. Hot off his mega-Iron Man success, Robert Downey Jr. is in talks to saddle up for his next big role, in the Brian Grazer-Ron Howard film Cowboys & Aliens. Per the Reporter, the movie would be a mix of the sci-fi and Western genres for what will likely be a tongue-in-cheek take on the mélange, and is set to hit theaters in 2010.The role would be Downey's first deal since smashing the box office competition as Iron Man. In the meantime, while the talks continue for the Cowboys role, audiences can get more of the steely hero in Tropic Thunder this August, and The Soloist in November. Are you pining for more of Downey Jr. in blockbuster type of roles, or wish he'd return to the sensitive fare that was Less Than Zero? With the long Memorial Day holiday this weekend, let's have some fun and play a game!We've actually played this game before, last October. I had a different blog back then, called "DVD Guy", and I called the game "Today's Stars...Yesterday!" We all had a great deal of fun, and lots of readers chimed in with their own examples of big-name celebs they've seen "in smaller roles, during leaner times".The way to play is very simple: Think of hot "new" stars that you see in any current TV show, and try to think of where you've spotted them on DVDs of older programs. Who is "the biggest star in the world right now"? Earlier this week, American Idol exec producer Nigel Lythgoe teased a truly stellar surprise performer for Wednesday night's results show. To those of you who guessed it would be Michael Jackson... well, you may be at least half right. TV Guide hears that George Michael, a chum of both Lythgoe and Simon Cowell, will be on hand for the Season 7 wrap-up, in part to promote his new greatest hits album.But is the former Wham! front man the Big Name we've been hearing about? TMZ is now reporting that "the biggest star in the world" may actually be referring to Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr., who through some computer wizardry and alongside Jack Black and Ben Stiller will sing back-up for a vintage clip of Glady Knight's "Midnight Train to Georgia." Iron Man, Office Boss Among MTV Award Presenters | Movie News | 5/19/2008
Planning for the upcoming MTV Movie Awards is well underway, and some of the show's star presenters were announced Monday. This year's award-givers span the spectrum of stardom, and will include Lindsay Lohan, Steve Carell and Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr. Other big faves to appear include Jack Black, Megan Fox, Seth Rogen and Jennifer Hudson. At the top of this year's nominees (with the award being a "golden popcorn") are Superbad, with five noms and Juno, which has four. The awards are fan-driven, with voting open up until May 23, and the big show set to go down Sunday, June 1 on MTV (8 pm/ET). Will you be tuning in — or tuning out? Award shows, which have been the object of critcism as ratings decline, might still be viable when viewers have a say. But then again, Kenny Chesney, who's against fan voting (in country music, at least), has a point, too.
