At the Sci Fi Upfronts: Battlestar Finale, New Shows and a New Name

Sci Fi chose their upfront event to screen the much-anticipated finale of their hit series Battlestar Galactica, introduce new shows and formally reveal their new name, SyFy.

Here are some of the highlights of the evening:

Battlestar Galactica
The evening began with the screening of the two-hour Galactica finale, "Daybreak — Part 2." Executive producer Ron Moore made reporters and critics raise their right hands and promise not to reveal any spoilers until it airs on Friday (10 pm/ET). We will abide by this promise, but say the show's bow is stunning, action-packed and quite emotional.

Ghost Hunters
Jason and Grant were good enough to name their "can't miss" episodes for TVGuide.com this season. They feature the creepy, old, abandoned Essex County Hospital and a Titanic exhibit with some reported spooky activity at the Georgia Aquarium. To raise the stakes — and the hairs on the back of your neck — the network is airing the Titanic episode on the anniversary of the ship's demise, April 15. We also couldn't resist asking if the boys minded being spoofed last year by Supernatural, and if they would be up for a cameo on the show. "We don't take ourselves seriously," said Grant. Jason echoed the sentiment, saying, "We'd love to... we think those guys are great and we'd love to meet them!" Read more about the Sci Fi upfronts after the jump! read more

SGU, which will launch with a two-hour premiere this summer, centers on a group of soldiers, scientists and civilians who are stranded in space after their ship comes under attack. Carlyle will play ...

Rumor Patrol: 24 Is Not Subtracting Hours from Day 7

Perhaps something was lost in translation...? In an interview with Premiere.com, Scotsman Robert Carlyle stated that the two hours covered by 24's November prequel movie will be applied against Season 7's episode count. "This is two hours in real time," he said, "and there'll then be 22 episodes."I caught wind of that Q&A via TVTattle.com and Carlyle's take didn't seem kosher, so I checked with Fox and confirmed that Day 7 indeed will be the usual 24 episodes/hours, wholly supplementary to the TV-movie.Carlyle also suggested that the final moments of the prequel will feed right into the opening scenes of Season 7, yet again, that is not exactly the case. The prequel itself picks up four years after the events of Day 6 — effectively planting Jack Bauer in the year 2017, if you have been keeping tabs — and then another few on-screen months will pass between the movie's sure-to-be-thrilling climax and Jack's appearance before Congress. — Matt MitovichMore 24 updates:... read more

Exclusive: Full Monty Star Joins 24 Prequel Pic!

Check your watches Ausholes, 'cause I'm pretty sure it's time for some 24 scoop! Sources confirm to me exclusively that Scottish thesp Robert Carlyle (The Full Monty) has been cast in Fox's upcoming 24 prequel movie as Benton, Jack's mentor in Africa. As Fox announced this morning, the two-hour telepic, shot on location in South Africa, will air on Nov. 23 and bridge the gap between Day 6 and Day 7. Carlyle's role is not expected to spill over into the drama's seventh season, but, well, this being 24, nothing's set in stone. Fun piece of casting, no? (I was going to say cheeky, but I thought better of it.) read more
