Starring the ever-bewildered but lovable James Stewart, the beautiful and tempestuous Paulette Goddard, and bandleader Horace Heidt and His Thirty Musical Knights, "Pot O' Gold" revolves around the band's struggle for its "big break." The members all live in Mrs. McCorkle's boarding house and spend their time practicing on the roof. When Jimmy Haskell (Stewart) arrives in town and meets Molly (Goddard) and the band, he soon has the band on his music-hating uncle's radio show, "The Haskell Happy Hour"--and from there it's straight to the top! The film includes such splashy swing numbers as "When Johnny Toots His Horn," "Pete the Piper," "Do You Believe in Fairy Tales?" and "A Knife, a Fork, and a Spoon." Paulette Goddard stars in director Jean Renoir's tale of Célestine, a chambermaid who decides to use her charms to snare a rich patron. But her attempts to seduce her new employer -- henpecked Monsieur Lanlaire (Reginald Owen) -- go awry. Celestine then aims for Lanlaire's son, Georges (Hurd Hatfield), but unstable valet Joseph (Francis Lederer) and eccentric neighbor Mauger (Burgess Meredith) also compete for her affections.
