Appeared in several theatrical productions while in college, including Grease and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
Studied acting at the Sanford Meisner Theatre.
Hosted several Nickelodeon game shows, including Get the Picture.
Is also a playwright; his play Searching for Certainty was made into a movie, Certainty (2010), for which he was also the screenwriter.
Was cast as blue-collar dad Burt Hummel on Glee after creator Ryan Murphy wrote the part with O'Malley in mind.
