Won "America's Fattest Baby" trophy when he was born, given to him by then-President William Howard Taft.
Was pre-law at UCLA, studying Political Science, but chose to try acting before applying to law school.
Made his Broadway debut in Othello in 1937.
Blacklisted in the 1950s because of his involvement with The Actors' Lab, a radical theater group.
Breakthrough was in 1958 as diver Mike Nelson on the syndicated series Sea Hunt.
Had a career resurgence later in life playing dim-witted authority figures in parody movies like Airplane! (1980), Hot Shots! (1991) and Mafia! (1998).
