Don't call Sons of Anarchy gritty.
It's not that the word doesn't accurately describe the show's bloody violence and testosterone-fueled moral darkness. Rather, Sons creator and executive producer Kurt Sutter just thinks the word has been used to death. And, Sutter says, all the gun-running and motor-revving is really just background noise to the show's family drama.

FX has handed out a 13-episode order to Sons of Anarchy, The Shield writer/producer Kurt Sutter's multigenerational family drama set in the world of motorcycle clubs, says the Reporter. In the series, Charlie Hunnam (Undeclared) plays Jack, a man in his thirties who suddenly must juggle fatherhood with his involvement in a biker organization. Katey Sagal has been tapped to star in Sons of Anarchy, an FX drama pilot from The Shield's Kurt Sutter (aka Sagal's real-life hubby), says the Reporter. The drama centers on Jack (Undeclared's Charles Hunnam), a twentysomething guy trying to juggle his role as a new dad with his involvement in the titular motorcycle club founded by his late father. Sagal plays Jack's mother and the matriarch of the club. The Sopranos' Allen Coulter is directing the pilot. Me, I already have bugs in my teeth.

According to the Reporter, Fox is developing three new dysfunctional-family-based animated series for the 2008-09 season: The Pitts, based on a short-lived live-action comedy and from The Simpsons' Mike Scully; Relative Insanity, exec-produced by Jack Black; and Mothballs, from the creators of Drawn Together....
