Humphrey Bogart Fast Facts:

Father was a Manhattan surgeon; mother a commercial illustrator.
Was bound for Yale until he was expelled from prep school
Joined the U.S. Navy near the end of WWI.
First big acting break came in 1935 in a Broadway production of Robert Sherwood's The Petrified Forest with Leslie Howard; he reprised the role in the 1936 film version.
In the late 1940s, along with Lauren Bacall, Groucho Marx, John Huston and others, protested the House Un-American Activities Committee, which was trying to root out Communists in Hollywood.
Starred opposite Lauren Bacall in four movies–To Have and Have Not (1944), The Big Sleep (1946), Dark Passage (1947) and Key Largo (1948).
Was an avid sailor who owned a yacht named Santana.
Given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960.
