It's getting to be a bit of a cliché to walk away, exhausted, from the TV on Super Bowl Sunday and declare that the game was more memorable than the overhyped ads. That was certainly the case this year, when a low-scoring but high-tension match between the previously unbeaten Patriots and the underdog (and ultimately triumphant) Giants upstaged a parade of silly ads, only a few of which are likely to be remembered in a day or a week, let alone a year from now.Thankfully, the day-and-night-long orgy of infotainment ended with a first-rate post-game episode of House — which in the New York market didn’t begin until 11 pm, thanks to a local news insert milking the jubilation. Mira Sorvino was the appealing guest star, playing an ailing shrink who catches the grouchy doctor’s eye all the way from the South Pole. Jeers: American Idol Fumbles the Super Bowl | Cheers & Jeers | 2/3/2008
Jeers to Fox for allowing American Idol to tarnish its Super Bowl pre-game show. The network enlisted Ryan Seacrest to emcee insipid red-carpet coverage of celebrities arriving at the big game. He annoyingly referred to Hugh Laurie (who looked like he was being held at gunpoint to promote House's supercool post-Super Bowl episode) as "Dr. House." Have a little respect, Ryan — the guy's an award-winning actor, not Urkel! Then Paula Abdul debuted her new single, "Dance Like There's No Tomorrow" (if only that were true for her career) with a pre-taped performance so listless, it made Britney's VMA sleepwalk look like Michael Jackson at Motown 25. (Watch video here.) Randy Jackson, whose new album (!) includes the song, stood off to the side and played bass, despite earlier threats that he, too, would dance. I suppose I could dwell on the fact that a major Hollywood guild has once again ignored the very existence of TV's finest acting ensemble, Friday Night Lights — in favor of the mugging and posturing on Boston Legal. As they'd say on another SAG favorite, Grey's Anatomy: Seriously? Is it wrong to want to form our own picket line?Also: What's up with snubbing Pushing Daisies and its fantastical cast?And yet the Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations, announced Thursday morning, did shower love on my favorite new show of 2007, AMC's Mad Men, and its terrific star, Jon Hamm (who has just joined the cast of the remake of the sci-fi classic The Day the Earth Stood Still, with Keanu Reeves as Klaatu, which sounds appropriately robotic). So while not all may be forgiven, the wound stings a little less.My favorite part of the SAG Awards is the ensemble-cast category. Because let's face it, most great TV shows rely on cast chemistry.
