Served in the Army from 1971-75.
First No. 1 country song was 1982's "Fool Hearted Memory." As of 2007, he has a total of 54 chart-toppers from his winning mix of honky-tonk and Western swing.

In 1986, his 13-year-old daughter Jenifer was killed in a motorcycle crash. He dedicated his CMA Male Vocalist of the Year award that year to her memory.
