Lawyer Clay Fletcher (John Payne) is dispatched to El Paso, Texas, to get a document signed by Judge Jeffers (Henry Hull), the father of a former flame (Gail Russell). Much to his dismay, Clay discovers that Jeffers has fallen off the wagon -- and the town is being run by scoundrels. Crooked Sheriff La Farge (Dick Foran) and saloon owner Bert Donner (Sterling Hayden) are making life hell for the townsfolk, and it's up to Clay to lay down the law.
