American Idol: Livin' in the '80s

American Idol went back to the '80s Wednesday night, with the Top 8 finalists performing song selections from music's most fluorescent decade — despite the fact that none of the contestants were alive in the 1980s. (Think about that for a second. Feel old yet?) They get help from a nearly unrecognizable David Cook, who returns to the Idol stage this week to act as a mentor.

We get our first elimination of the night fairly early, when judge Keith Urban opts to ditch his bitchin' mullet ("sixty thousand dollars' worth of hair extensions," quips his co-panelist Harry Connick, Jr.) within the first five minutes of the show.

With the judges having used their only save on Sam Woolf last week, someone will definitely be going home on Thursday night. So, how did the Top 8 do? Let's get to the performances:read more

The Thursday Playlist: Parks and Rec Finale, Newhart Visits Big Bang Theory

Something you don't expect any NBC show that isn't The Voice to be asking: "Are you better off than a year ago?" Leave it to cockeyed optimist Leslie Knope (the sublime Amy Poehler), the hopeful heart and resilient soul of Parks and Recreation, to set herself up for a smackdown in the too-soon season finale (Thursday, 9:31/8:31c), by posing this question at a public forum that she naively sees as a "victory lap" to celebrate her one-year anniversary in office. While Leslie contends with a Pawnee version of Tea Party-style opposition — in this town, more like "sweet tea," with extra sugar in a 512 oz. cup — Andy (Chris Pratt) adopts his bumbling "Burt Macklin, FBI" persona (always a win) to solve a mystery that could change one of his co-worker's life forever. NBC is certainly better off for sticking with this show as it has improved over the seasons to become the network's most reliably enjoyable comedy — even though this already eventful and possibly pivotal episode would have been better off without the subplot involving Tom's "Rent-a-Swag" business and his contentious relationship with Jean-Ralphio's horror-show sister Mona Lisa (Jenny Slate).

Top Moments: Lost Lets Go, 24 Moves On and Idol Says Goodbye

Season finales provided a lot of healthy closure this week, at least according to our shrink Mitzi Cohen-McGinty, Ph.D. She says that The Biggest Loser is not just about how we look on the outside. She praised Glee for showing us that there is no "right" when it comes to the relationship between a child and the mother who gave her up for adoption. She thinks Jack and Chloe are totally 24's most codependent coworkers, so it's good that they've decided to spend some time apart. And finally, according to Dr. Cohen-McGinty, Lost's season finale is just a metaphor for the journey to self-actualization that we all must take — except, you know, while we're still truckin' on this mortal coil — and preferably from the couch of her stately Upper West Side salon. Welcome to Top Moments: Everybody in Therapy Edition.
