Brian Dennehy, a silver-screen vet and six-time Emmy nominee, is bringing his acting chops — and perhaps some savory lamb chops, as well! — to CBS' Rules of Engagement, TVGuide.com has learned exclusively.In one of the sitcom's first Season 3 episodes, Dennehy will guest-star as the father of Patrick Warburton's Jeff. The verbal jabs fly between Jeff's wife, Audrey, and her father-in-law, whose alpha-male antics, unbridled love for meat and blatant chauvinism make his sometimes-gruff son look positively refined.Dennehy's big-screen resume includes the tracking and capture of one John Rambo (in First Blood) and F/X. Tonight's episode is the fourth and last of the six that were produced that ABC intends to run. (All six will be seen in Canada, at least, on the cable channel Space, starting in November). And it was the episode a number of viewers were most eager to see, I suspect, since it was based on a short story by Harlan Ellison, who has established himself as a major figure in both fantastic fiction (among other sorts of prose) and in screenwriting, as well as being responsible for some notable comics scripting and work in other media. Apparently Ellison gave executive producer Keith Addis strong support when they resisted the attempts by ABC to call the series "Masters of Sci-Fi," which would be comparable to calling its Showtime sibling series Masters of Horror something like "Masters of Spookiness" (ABC chose to slip "scifi" into the URL for the series' pages on abc.go.com, anyway... perhaps the smallest of many hostilities the network has shown toward this project). Question: I just watched the wonderful Live from Lincoln Center presentation of The Light in the Piazza. I was wondering if the program is eligible for Emmy nominations next year (especially Victoria Clark)? They definitely deserve them!
Answer: I would imagine the show and the Tony-winning Victoria Clark would be eligible. (Brian Dennehy was nominated for his performance in the Showtime presentation of his Tony-winning work in Death of a Salesman.) I've seen Piazza three times in person, and thought it translated quite well to TV. I'm glad to have a permanent recording of Clark's work in particular.
