  • Attended school and took ballet lessons in the Nazi-occupied town of Arnhem, Holland.
  • Went to London on a ballet scholarship as a teenager, but continued health problems suffered during the war squashed her hopes of becoming a prima ballerina.
  • Played the lead in the 1951 Broadway adaptation of Gigi. French novelist Colette, whose short story was the source material for the play, personally recommended her for the role.
  • Fluent in English, French, Spanish, Italian and Dutch.
  • Became close friends with French fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy on the set of Sabrina and donned his original apparel throughout her life.
  • One of a small group to have won an Oscar, Emmy, Grammy and Tony awards.
  • Lip-synched the songs in the movie musical My Fair Lady infamously recorded by "Voice of Hollywood" Marni Nixon.
  • Served as a UNICEF International Goodwill Ambassador from 1988 until her death from colon cancer in 1993.
