“It’s never too late to choose.” The simple, eloquent words of the terminally ill cancer patient seemed to echo the theme tonight — people choosing to take a stand and trying to make things right. As this season winds down and we prepare for the imminent departure of beloved characters, emotions are running high and the writers seem to be upping the ante in terms of character development and story progression. When I think about characters on ER who haven’t made much of an impression on me, Sam immediately comes to mind. I have often felt that the role was ill-conceived and underdeveloped — a big disappointment since I’ve found Linda Cardellini to be very compelling in other vehicles. The entire detour into “crazy Steve” land that kicked off this season was so distracting and uninteresting to me that the ensuing fallout between Sam and her son Alex generated little more than apathy on my end. However, these episodes with Annabella... read more
  • April 12, 2007: Photographs and Memories | ER | 4/13/2007
During the seven long weeks since the last new ER episode, news broke about the impending departure of Goran Visnjic. That disturbing development got me thinking about what I’d like to say to the Powers-That-Be over at the Peacock network about the future of our beloved show. Herewith, my plea, along with some thoughts about tonight’s developments. Dear NBC,For starters, let me just say up front that I have been a fan of ER since those heady, early Must-See-TV days. I’ve stuck by the show while all of my favorite characters — Doug, Carol, Benton, Mark, Carter — have taken their leave. Heck, even Kerry had won me over by the time she departed for Miami with son Henry in tow. So, I think I’ve been patient and I’ve given new cast additions a chance to grow on me. I’ve invested myself in the stories and the natural evolution of characters who came and went, sometimes with little fanfare or explanation. (In my heart, I keep trying to convince... read more

Goldfrapp. Awesome.Guest.Appearance. Definitely the best since Heart played an acoustic "Crazy on You" last season. Surprisingly, my favorite scene of this evening was the main Tina-Bette scene. As bitch-on-wheels as they've both been throughout the last two seasons, I enjoy any minute we get that reminds us why we've loved both these characters since Season 1. I'm also happy that they were able to be really candid with each other and for once not have the scene break into hostility and a parting of ways. I don't know that I ever want them to get back together, but I do enjoy them as... well... as family. They share a child, they share a very complicated history, they're family forever because of Angelica. So I'm glad to see that they're working past the hurt and bitterness and treating each other more like family now. Also, Tina was right about Bette and Jodi; I do believe they're the perfect match. It's good that Bette feels challenged by a partner that is so strong, but it's also... read more
  • December 26, 2006: (Welcome to the) Dollhouse | Law & Order: Criminal Intent | 12/27/2006
Not a bad episode, but a very low-key one — the energy just didn’t seem to be there, and the whole case had a going-through-the-motions feel. The worst offender was definitely backstabbing lawyer-girl — who didn’t earn the time it would take me to look up her real name. Miss shall-remain-nameless was handed a strong dichotomous hero/villain role and squandered it with a reading-cue-cards-after-five-Xanax performance. On the plus side, I was pleasantly surprised to find Annabella Sciorra providing some much-needed spark throughout (and she looked pretty cute in those silly little hats too). The story itself was interesting enough, though, like everything else, oddly bloodless. Cheating spouses, warring siblings, extortion plots — yawn, seen them all before. The one standout element was the baby-papa scam perpetrated by Showgirl Elizabeth Berkley, giving what may have been her best performance ever with a shirt on. Her plotline led to the funniest moment of... read more
