First Look: Nathan Fillion Guest Stars on Disney XD's Gravity Falls

Perhaps Richard Castle can solve the spooky mystery of Gravity Falls. On Monday's episode of the hit Disney XD animated series, Castle star Nathan Fillion makes a guest appearance.

Fillion plays Preston Northwest, the father of local tween Pacifica — who's an archrival of Mabel Pines (Kristen Schaal). In the episode "The Golf War," Mabel challenges Pacifica to a rousing game of miniature golf. Things get out of hand, however, when a group of local residents — the Lilliputians — offer their help. Also guest starring is Patton Oswalt (The Goldbergs) as Franz, one of the Lilliputian leaders.

First Look: Disney XD's Gravity Falls Returns for Season 2

The mysterious and quirky world of Gravity Falls is finally back for another season after a year-long break. The Disney XD animated cult fave picks up where Season 1 left off, as nemesis Lil' Gideon has been defeated and the Pines family looks to return things to normal.

In the Season 2 opener "Scary-oke," Grunkle Stan, Dipper and Mabel Pines throw a "Mystery Shack is Back" party — but then some unwelcome guests crash it. The episode premieres on Friday, Aug. 1 at 9/8c on Disney Channel, before moving to its regular home, Disney XD, on Monday, Aug. 4 at 9/8c.

Immediately following the Monday airing, at 9:30/8:30c, Disney XD will air another episode, "Into the Bunker." The episode follows Dipper as his secret journal pages lead him to the author's hidden bunker — where they meet a mysterious Gravity Falls figure.

First Look: Disney XD Premieres New Gravity Falls Shorts

As Gravity Falls fans await the second season adventures of Grunkle Stan, Dipper and Mabel Pines, Disney XD plans to tide them over with two new shorts.

Disney XD will air the Gravity Falls short "Mabel's Scrapbook: Heist Movie" on Monday, June 2, at 6:59/5:59c; an hour later, it will run "Mabel's Scrapbook: Petting Zoo" at 7:59/6:59c.

Disney renewed the hit animated series, created by young animator Alex Hirsch, for a second season last year. Season 1 premiered on Disney Channel, but the network decided to move Gravity Falls and another cartoon, Wander Over Yonder, to Disney XD this year. (No return date has been announced yet for Gravity Falls.) Both shows feature a slightly older, edgier tone that likely fits better with the pre-teen Disney XD crowd.

Gravity Falls — a mix of Twin Peaks, The X-Files, Lost and the animated feature Monster House, wrapped in a comedic, irreverent bow — features the voices of Hirsch, Jason Ritter, Kristen Schaal and Linda Cardellini. Hirsch, Ritter and Schaal are set to participate in a live reading and Q&A session with fans at the Los Angeles Film Festival on Saturday, June 14.

Watch My Show: Gravity Falls' Alex Hirsch Answers Our Showrunner Survey

It's The X-Files meets Twin Peaks — but animated, and for kids. Disney Channel's Gravity Falls, which airs a new episode Aug. 24 at 9:30/8:30c, may be unlike any other cartoon out there. Jason Ritter and Kristen Schaal play Dipper and Mabel Pines, siblings who are forced to spend the summer with their eccentric great-uncle in a town where very weird things happen. Creator Alex Hirsch says he conceives each episode like a "little movie," as the show explores its versions of urban legends. We asked him to scare up some reasons why we should investigate Gravity Falls.

First Look: Jason Ritter, Kristen Schaal, Linda Cardellini on Disney Channel's Gravity Falls

It's The X-Files meets Twin Peaks — but animated. Oh, and for kids. Disney Channel's Gravity Falls, which launches tonight at 9:30/8:30c, may be unlike any other cartoon out there for the runny-nose set — and that's the appeal.

Disney, which already reinvented its cartoon brand with irreverent fare like megahit Phineas and Ferb, goes even further down that path with Gravity Falls, the tale of a brother and sister forced to spend the summer with their great-uncle (or "Grunkle") in a town where very weird things happen. Jason Ritter plays bright-eyed youngster Dipper Pines, while Kristen Schaal provides the voice of his eager sister Mabel. Linda Cardellini is on board as teenager Wendy, the older object of Dipper's affections.
