Showtime Renews Californication; Sets Returns for Nurse Jackie, United States of Tara

On the heels of its most-watched series premiere, Californication has been picked up for a fifth season.  The Season 4 debut of the David Duchovny comedy drew 1.2 million viewers between its two airings Sunday. Showtime also announced Friday that Nurse Jackie and United States of Tara will return on Monday, March 28. The Borgias, an upcoming period drama starring Jeremy Irons, will debut with a two-hour premiere on April 3 at 9/8c.

TV Pet Peeves --- What Really Grinds Our Gears?

There's an episode of Family Guy where Peter gets to do an "everyman" editorial segment on the evening news with the tagline: "You know what really grinds my gears?" Then he rambles about something that annoys him. It's hard not to think of this bit every time something really off happens on one of our favorite TV shows. We asked around the office to see what stories or characters really "grind our gears" lately.The OfficeWhy the heck can't Jim plan a simple party for Kelly? Yes, it's funny that he and Dwight are the party-planning committee, but Jim is thoughtful and sweet, not a moron. Why can't he buy a nice cake and some balloons and put together a fun party? This is the same guy who bought Pam a teapot she mentioned once and filled it with all sorts of fun inside jokes. But he can't spell Kelly's name? Juno's Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody has created a new dramedy for Showtime about a married, suburban artist with two kids — and she happens to suffer from Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), commonly referred to as multiple personalities. Diablo sat down with TVGuide.com to talk about transitioning from film to television writing, working with Steven Spielberg and a dream cast, and what it's like to write so many different personalities for Tara. The United States of Tara premieres Sunday at 10 pm/ET.TVGuide.com: Let's talk about DID. Did you get to talk to people who actually suffer from the disorder?Diablo Cody: Yes I did. We actually have one consultant working on the show who is a mother who lived with DID and raising her kids. Showtime Sets Premiere Lineup for its Leading Ladies

Look out, Oxygen: Showtime could be emerging as the other destination for ladies  albeit not the warm-fuzzy types. The net has announced that both new and returning female-driven shows will premiere in a triple-header on Sunday, Jan. 18. The back-to-back lineup will kick off at 9 pm with start of The L Word's sixth and final season, followed by the 10 pm series debut of United States of Tara. Showtime Sneak Peeks: Edie Falco and Toni Collette

Breaking news! Edie Falco is an awesome actress. This reporter learned this  definitely not exclusively  when he saw a sneak peek at Falco's new half-hour Showtime dramedy (tentatively titled Nurse Jackie) on Friday. Falco plays a complicated nurse in an inner-city hospital. "What do you call a nurse with a back problem?" she asks in the preview. (Pause.) "Unemployed." As a result, the wisecracking, potty-mouthed, maybe-promiscuous Nurse Jackie also has a bit of a painkiller problem. It looks very promising.Ditto for Toni Collette, who plays a suburban mom who suffers from multiple-personality disorder on United States of Tara. Here's what makes this show interesting to me: Tara's family (including husband John Corbett) is aware of her illness, tolerates it and even knows and has relationships with each of her personalities.
