In the series pilot, prodigal son Mitch (Fred Savage) returns home from Hollywood when his mom, Suzanne (Jane Curtin), is released from a psychiatric hospital, where she was committed after trying to run over her husband, Billy (who had left her for a younger woman). A nervy Billy is jealous of Suzanne's affair with Elvis, while Suzanne's jealous of Billy's pregnant girlfriend, so warfare erupts between the exes. Meanwhile, Mitch is in the dumps because his agent has dumped him. But that's just as well: He has developed writer's block.

Suzanne gets a job at a Colonial museum, where the guy who plays Ben Franklin (Martin Mull) hits on her. Meanwhile, Mitch is attracted to a younger gay man (Ryder Strong) who also works at the museum, but he wants Mitch to come out to his family; and Billy decides that he wants to be buried in the family plot.
