Oscars 2019: Regina King Wins Best Supporting Actress

Regina King held court at the 2019 Oscars.

At Sunday night's Academy Awards, King took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her powerful performance in If Beale Street Could Talk. This was her first win and first nomination.

During her acceptance speech, King said, "To be standing here representing one of the greatest artists of our time, James Baldwin, is a little surreal. James Baldwin birthed this baby and Barry [Jenkins], you nurtured her and surrounded her with so much support."

Beale Street, Barry Jenkins' film adaptation of the 1974 James Baldwin novel, was surprisingly shut out of the Best Picture race, but King has dominated this awards season. The actress' captivating turn as devoted mother Sharon Rivers also landed her a Golden Globe, a Critics' Choice Award and a BAFTA nomination.

King's fellow nominees in the category were Marina de Tavira (Roma), Amy Adams (Vice), Emma Stone (The Favourite) and Rachel Weisz (The Favourite).
