NBC Pilot Playboy Finds a Top Director
The director who brought Mad Men to life will now do the same for another 1960s-set drama, the NBC pilot Playboy. Alan Taylor was hired late Thursday to direct the pilot of Playboy, which takes place during the same era that helped make Mad Men a critical darling. Like Mad Men, Playboy is aiming to capture the look and feel of the social and cultural revolution of the early 1960s. The story follows the exploits of a group of women hired to work at a Playboy Club in Chicago.

Alan Taylor was hired late Thursday to direct the pilot of Playboy, which takes place during the same era that helped make Mad Men a critical darling. Like Mad Men, Playboy is aiming to capture the look and feel of the social and cultural revolution of the early 1960s. The story follows the exploits of a group of women hired to work at a Playboy Club in Chicago.
Taylor directed the first episode of Mad Men, titled "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," in 2007 and has directed several more episodes since then, including "Nixon vs. Kennedy" from Season One and "The Mountain King" in Season Two. He has also directed episodes of HBO hits Boardwalk Empire, Big Love, Lost, Deadwood, Sex and the City and The Sopranos.
As a matter of fact, executives at 20th Century Fox TV — which is producing Playboy, along with Imagine TV — are positioning Playboy as a cross between Mad Men and The Sopranos. "It's a provocative title and a sexy world," said 20th Century Fox TV executive vice president Jennifer Nicholson Salke.
