Mom Star Sadie Calvano on Violet's "Big Decision" and Pregnancy Plot Backlash

There's babies on the brain on Monday's episode of Mom — for everyone, that is, except Violet (Sadie Calvano), who would like nothing more than to completely forget about the fact that her due date is fast approaching. "Violet's undoubtedly made mistakes, as every teenager does," Calvano tells TVGuide.com. "But at the end of the day, Violet's a really smart girl. And I do think as the pregnancy comes closer and closer to its end, she struggles with deciding what the smartest choice is regarding this baby, so that she can break the cycle and give the baby the life that she wishes she could have had."

Oscars: Fashion hits and misses

Though Mom is a sitcom, the show has dealt with some serious issues in its first season, including Violet's pregnancy and her grandmother Bonnie's (Allison Janney) drinking relapse. Calvano said she's aware that the story lines, Violet's in particular, have turned off some viewers.

"I try not to get too invested in that part of it," she admits. "But I have heard a little bit. Of course everyone's going to react differently, as they would in real life, to a teen pregnancy. But I think that bigger than a pregnancy, our show's talking about breaking the cycle of dysfunction."

With Violet's "big decision" weighing on her mind, Monday's installment includes a flash-forward in which Violet's mom Christy (Anna Faris) imagines what life will be like in their house when Violet's baby is a teenager. (Spoiler: It's not a pretty picture.)

"I think that it's really easy to say, oh, [raising] this baby would be such an amazing, amazing thing," Calvano says. "But when you really start to think about it, there's so, so, so many factors that go into raising a child, especially being in a low-income household with single parents that are all working. ... It's a lot."
