Everything We Know About Mayans M.C. Season 2 So Far

Mayans M.C., the spin-off of the hugely popular FX drama Sons of Anarchy, enjoyed a very successful first season when it debuted in the fall of 2018. Even the most skeptical viewers found themselves drawn into the story of EZ Reyes (JD Pardo) and the various members of the Mayans motorcycle club as the show quickly established itself as its own entity. By the end of the first season, the drama had exceeded many viewers' expectations and maybe even shown hints that it could become a more important series than the one that spawned it.

Ahead of the second season premiere, co-creators Kurt Sutter and Elgin James joined cast members Pardo, Clayton Cardenas, Edward James Olmos, Sarah Bolger, Danny Pino and Emilio Rivera at the Television Critics Association summer press tour to preview the road ahead. Here's everything we know about the new season thus far.

It will premiere this fall. The second chapter kicks off Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 10/9c on FX.

Mayans M.C. Season 2 Trailer: EZ Tells Angel the Truth About Their Mother

There is a pretty big time jump. Season 2 picks up approximately six to eight months after the end of Season 1, and things will have changed, but they are also still very much the same...

EZ and Angel are still on the outs. Although more than half a year will have passed when the season begins, the big blowout that occurred between the Reyes brothers at the end of Season 1 created a crack in their relationship that has yet to be repaired when the show returns. EZ telling Angel (Cardenas) that he knows who killed their mother might just allow them to start fixing it, but it will likely be a long process.

"I think what's beautiful about [their relationship] is there is so much history there. It's not just our relationship, it's how we were raised, it's the different relationships we both had to our father, Felipe," said Pardo. "So it's a process. It's not really worked out, it's just constantly evolving. And we're navigating those waters of how, emotionally, we feel about each other. ... I think EZ coming to Angel about Happy, it serves as a bridge."

EZ is still straddling two worlds. At the end of Season 1, EZ made the decision to stay in the club, ultimately against his brother's wishes. Sutter promises we'll find out more of the emotional and family reasons he made that decision in the second episode of the season. However, EZ is still a prospect in Season 2, and he is still straddling two worlds despite choosing to stay in the club.

"He's made a decision to move forward in this [world], but the echo of who he thought he was going to be is still very much in his ear," said Sutter. "As the season progresses, he still wrestles with that until, ultimately, I think by the end of Season 2, he has some sense of where he belongs."

The Most Likely to Succeed New Show of the TV Season Is Mayans M.C.

Season 2 is even more intense. According to Olmos, the "show's moving in a very, very strong way. I think the second season is much more intense and much more rewarding to the viewers than the first season. I'm really proud of it. The writing is just magnificent."

There may or may not be a reason to be worried about Happy. With the knowledge that Happy (David LaBrava) was responsible for killing EZ and Angel's mother, fans are predictably a little worried about Happy's chances of survival, especially since Sutter killed a number of SAMCRO members on Sons of Anarchy (RIP Opie!). And although Sutter wouldn't exactly say whether that worry was unfounded, he did say that "as of yet" he hasn't "killed Opie again."

Miguel and Emily's marriage isn't going to be smooth sailing. "They're human people who are severely flawed. They're in a marriage in the most dangerous business in the world, trying to keep a family together," said Bolger. "That is something that we're dealing with, trying to meander down the path of truth and honesty in a world that doesn't allow for that."

The Sons of Anarchy connections will begin to fade. Sutter and James used the show's connection to Sons of Anarchy sparingly as connective tissue in Season 1. Lincoln Potter (Ray McKinnon) turned out to be the thorn in many people's sides (which he'll continue to be in Season 2), and Happy was revealed to be responsible for the death of EZ and Angel's mother. But even though the season premiere will tease some of the issues that have plagued SAMCRO since Jax Teller's (Charlie Hunnam) death, the connections to Sons will slowly begin to fade into the background in Season 2, and with good reason.

"It was always a transitional process, using the mythology that everyone spent a lot of time and energy creating for seven years on Sons and using that to launch this new mythology," said Sutter. "For me, it was doing it in a way that never undermined where we left off on Sons, meaning I want people to have their own point of view about what happened to the club after that final season. And I want that to sort of live in their own imaginations. So the choices I make, I do in a ... way that doesn't impact that but shows the connection in terms of mythology."

"In Season 2, as we sort of button up some of the connections between both worlds, I think that will continue to fade to the background ... and [allow] the Mayan mythology to become its own thing."
