Matt's Weekend Picks: August 13-15

THE PILLARS OF THE EARTH(Friday, 10/9c, Starz)
More scheming, brawling and tragic treachery afoot in the pivotal fifth hour of this sprawling historical melodrama, as Waleran (Ian McShane) plays political games to further his goal to become Archbishop of Canterbury. Meanwhile, as the town of Kingsbridge prepares for another attack, the conflict between sort-of-brothers Jack and Alfred leads to ruin.
INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS(Saturday, 8/7c, Showtime)
Quentin Tarantino's outrageous send-up of World War II action movies makes its pay-cable debut. Take this chance to savor some thrilling set pieces (the suspenseful opening, a tense stand-off in a tavern) and Christoph Waltz' Oscar-winning performance as a cunning SS Colonel. We still don't know what to make of Brad Pitt's mannered tough-guy act as the leader of a team of Jewish-American soldiers tasked to collect Nazi scalps. Not for the squeamish.

BEING HUMAN(Saturday, 10/9c, BBC America)
The spotlight falls this week on poor George (Russell Tovey), the reluctant werewolf, making his most desperate attempt yet to contain his inner beast. He gets a new job and girlfriend, and even a cage—but will it be enough? Meanwhile, his ghost roomie Annie meets a mysterious phantom who offers to help her keep Death from knocking again.

COMEDY CENTRAL ROAST OF DAVID HASSEHOFF(Sunday, 10/9c, Comedy Central)
America's got a talent for skewering its Hollywood bad boys with profanely humorous abuse, and with "The Hof" on the spit for this latest roast, we predict he'll be toast by the end. With fellow Baywatch alum Pamela Anderson, Jerry Springer and roastmaster Seth MacFarlane on the dais, expect more than a few references to the roastee's infamous YouTube nadir involving alcohol and a cheeseburger. Some things write themselves.
