The animated film, about a teenage rabbit next in line to become the Easter Bunny, took in an estimated $38.1 million in its first weekend of release.
The Jake Gyllenhaal thriller Source Code came in second, grossing $15 million. The third new release of the weekend, the horror film Insidious, followed at No. 3 and scared up $13.4 million.
Wimpy Kid beats Sucker Punch at the box office
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules, last week's top film, earned $10.2 million and ranked fourth. Drawing $9.4 million, Limitless took the No. 5 spot.
The Lincoln Lawyer came in sixth with $7 million. Sucker Punch followed at No. 7, grossing $6 million.
Rounding out the top 10: Rango (No. 8, $4.5 million, for a five-week total of $113.8 million), Paul (No. 9, $4.3 million) and Battle: Los Angeles (No. 10, $3.5 million).
