Emmys Looking to Revamp Show

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences isn't done shaking up the Emmy format: Two weeks after expanding the nomination fields from five to six in certain categories, the Academy is considering a complete overhaul of the award ceremony, Variety reports.
The first order of business for the Academy's Board of Governors will be to reduce the number of awards handed out on the live broadcast. Currently, 28 categories are presented, but a new proposal would drop the TV movie and miniseries awards, and possibly those in the reality, variety/music/comedy and specials races. The excised categories may be presented at a pre-ceremony on the same evening as the Emmys, and the winners' speeches would air during the live telecast.
The suggestion is not sitting well with fans of the TV movie and miniseries categories. "The problem is not too many awards, it's that the show is not very good," former Academy governor Stanley M. Brooks said. "Give us something relevant. It would be a real tragedy if they diminished the show by eliminating any of the longform categories."
No changes have been made yet, the Academy said.
This isn't the first time the Board has tried to freshen up the Emmys. Two years ago, the awards were presented "theater-in-the-round" style. And last year's show included the five reality-show host nominees: Tom Bergeron, Heidi Klum, Jeff Probst, Howie Mandel and Ryan Seacrest.
