Hunnam will star in Apple TV Plus' Shantaram
Charlie Hunnam is returning to the small screen. The Sons of Anarchy star will play the lead role in Apple TV+'s upcoming series Shantaram, which has received a 10-episode order, TV Guide has confirmed. Deadline was first to report the news.
Shantaram is based on a best-selling 2003 novel by Gregory David Roberts. It tells the story of Lin (Hunnam), an Australian bank robber who escapes from prison and slips into the underworld of 1980s Bombay, India (now known as Mumbai). The series is written and executive-produced by American Hustlescreenwriter Eric Warren Singer. Assassin's Creed's Justin Kurzel will direct the first two episodes. Other executive producers include Steve Golin, Nicole Clemens, Andrea Barron, Richard Sharkey, and Fear the Walking Dead co-creator and former Sons of Anarchy writer Dave Erickson.

Shantaram will be Hunnam's first TV role since Sons of Anarchy ended in 2014. He starred as soulful outlaw biker Jax Teller in the FX series. Since then, he has turned his attention to movies, starring in The Lost City of Z, King Arthur: The Legend of the Sword, and Triple Frontier, among others.
A premiere date for Shantaram has not been set. Apple TV+ launches Nov. 1.
