Box Office: The Fault in our Stars Shines, Tom Cruise's Edge of Tomorrow Starts Soft

Teens with terminal cancer drew a surprising number of moviegoers to the box office this weekend, as 20^thCentury Fox's The Fault in our Stars made a healthy debut at the box office. The Shailene Woodley film, which is based on the über-popular young adult novel of the same name, easily won the weekend, bringing in more than $48 million, according to Box Office Mojo. Meanwhile, last week's champ Maleficent slipped more than 50 percent in its second week, with ticket sales totaling $33.5 million.

Tom Cruise's Edge of Tomorrow, the other big release of the weekend, soldiered into third place for Warner Bros. with $29.1 million. Though it received strong reviews, the debut was lower than that of Cruise's Oblivion, which opened last year to $37 million.

More must-see summer movies

X-Men: Days of Future Past finished fourth with $14.7 million, followed by Seth MacFarlane's A Million Ways to Die in the West with $7.2 million.

Godzilla stomped into sixth place with $5.9 million, followed by Neighbors with $5.2 million and Blended with $4 million.

Rounding out the top 10 were Chef, which cooked up $2.6 million sales, and Million Dollar Arm, which grabbed $1.8 million.
