The action blockbuster grossed an estimated $33.5 million to take the top spot for the third straight week, according to Box Office Mojo. The Hunger Games has now taken in more than $450 million worldwide and is poised to pass $300 million domestically on Sunday or Monday.
Hunger Games shoots down Wrath of the Titans, Mirror Mirror at the box office
American Reunion, the fourth theatrical installment in the American Pie franchise, drew $21.5 million to take second place. That's far below the openings for American Pie 2 ($45.1 million) and American Wedding ($33.3 million). Titanic's return voyage to movie theaters — this time in 3D! — brought in $17.3 million to come in at No. 3.
Wrath of the Titans, ranked fourth with $15 million, while Mirror Mirror completed the top 5 with $11 million.
Rounding out the top 10: 21 Jump Street(No. 6, $10.2 million); The Lorax(No. 7, $5 million); Salmon Fishing in the Yemen(No. 8, $975,000); John Carter(No. 9, $820,000); and Safe House(No. 10, $581,000).
