Borgnine to Get Lifetime Achievement Award from SAG

Ernest Borgnine will receive a lifetime achievement award from the Screen Actors Guild at the organization's 17th annual awards ceremony.

SAG announced Wednesday that the 93-year-old actor will be recognized when it hands outs its prizes on Sunday, Jan. 30, live on TNT and TBS.

"Whether portraying brutish villains, sympathetic everymen, complex leaders or hapless heroes, Ernest Borgnine has brought a boundless energy which, at 93, is still a hallmark of his remarkably busy life and career," guild President Ken Howard said. "It is with that same joyous spirit that we salute his impressive body of work and his steadfast generosity."

Borgnine, who's displayed a broad range over his seven-decade career, first gained filmgoers' attention with his scary, yet nuanced performance as Sgt. "Fatso" Judson in 1953's best picture Academy Award winner From Here to Eternity. In the film, he played the brig warden who virtually beats Maggio (Frank Sinatra in his Oscar-winning supporting role) to death. Borgnine went on to win an Oscar for best actor for his portrayal of a lonely butcher in Paddy Chayefsky's 1955 classic Marty, another best picture winner.
Borgnine's credits total some 200 films and TV shows, and he appeared often on live anthology TV series in the 1950s. His biggest claim to TV fame was the ABC sitcom McHale's Navy (1962-66).

The veteran performer — who lives in Beverly Hills, Calif., with wife Tova — has continued to work, playing Manny the doorman in The Single Guy (1995-97), voicing the semi-retired aquatic superhero Mermaid Man in SpongeBob SquarePants and filling the title role in the 2007 TV movie A Grandpa for Christmas.

He has four projects completed or in postproduction.
