Best New Shows and Movies on Netflix This Week: El Camino, Ghosts of Sugar Land

Looking for something new to watch on Netflix? Here is a list of all the best new shows and movies released on Netflix the week of Oct. 11-17.

There's really only one best new movie or show on Netflix this week, and that's El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, the mysterious movie sequel to the legendary TV series. It's a pretty light week for major new releases on Netflix otherwise, because there's not much that can compete with Breaking Bad. Unusually, there's no comedy special this week, bucking Tuesday tradition. But there are some promising international releases, including a show and a movie with very different visions of modern Paris.

The Biggest Releases

El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie
Yeah, bitch! It's finally here! Jesse Pinkman's (Aaron Paul) Breaking Bad story continues in this sequel from series creator Vince Gilligan, who writes and directs the film. You may not think Jesse Pinkman's tale needs continuation, but Gilligan & Co. wouldn't do it if they didn't have a good idea. Refresh your Breaking Bad memory, then hit play to find out which of your Breaking Bad faves besides Jesse's friends Badger (Matt Jones) and Skinny Pete (Charles Baker) are coming back.

Ghosts of Sugar Land
This harrowing documentary short traces the radicalization of a young American Muslim man who is suspected of joining ISIS through the eyes of his friends, who wear superhero masks to conceal their identities. It's a heartbreaking and disturbing look at how vulnerable young people get poisoned by ideology online. It won the short film jury award at the Sundance Film Festival (Trailer / Wednesday, Oct. 16)

Everything Else

Insatiable, Season 2
Season 1 of Insatiable has an abysmal Metacritic score of 25, the lowest rating of any 2018 show on our review-aggregating sister site. But enough people watched the dark comedy for it to get a second season, and it has nowhere to go but up. Is Season 2 actually any better? TBD! Netflix didn't send screeners to critics, which is not a good sign. (Trailer)

The Forest of Love
This dark crime movie from controversial Japanese director Sion Sono tells the story of a charismatic leader who led his impressionable young followers down a depraved path of death and destruction. But it's funny and kinda sexy and shot on bleary '70s-style film. (Trailer)

Fractured
Sam Worthington, the world's most anonymous movie star, plays a man whose wife and daughter disappear into thin air in this mystery thriller. Worthington will be in the next Avatar movies, but if James Cameron vanished him, would anyone notice? Just a thought. This is one of those parental anxiety movies, which not everyone can take. Haunted, Season 2
Netflix's take on the Unsolved Mysteries-style reenactment genre, with above-average production value and unusually spooky stories. If you've ever met a demon, you should get in touch with the producers. Maybe you can tell your story in Season 3. (Trailer)

La Influencia
Netflix's tags on this one are "Family Reunion, Evil Kid, Horror." So that's what you're getting. From Spain. (Trailer)

Plan Coeur, Season 2
Also known as The Hook Up Plan, this French dramedy is about the romantic ups-and-downs of sexy young Parisians. So if you want to imagine your boyfriend is a chiseled Frenchman with a yacht and not an out-of-shape dweeb in a flannel shirt who sleeps on an uncomfortable mattress and still won't stop talking about Jeffrey Epstein, here's your glamorous fantasy. The Awakening of Motti Wolenbruch
My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Orthodox Jewish style. In this Swiss comedy, a young Orthodox man falls in love with a shiksa against the wishes of his overbearing mother, who wants him to marry a woman just like her. File under "Netflix has something for everybody." (Trailer)

YooHoo to the Rescue, Season 2
Cute animals help friends in need in this animated series for ages 4 and up. It's kind of like PAW Patrol, but gentler. (Trailer)

Banlieusards
A 15-year-old French boy who's the son of African immigrants must choose which of his older brothers he wants to emulate: scholarly and woke law student Soulaymaan or rugged and violent gangster Demba. This gritty movie -- its English title is Street Flow -- shows a very different side of Paris than Plan Coeur. (Trailer / Saturday, Oct. 12)

The Unlisted, Season 1
Dystopian sci-fi for kids! Identical twin brothers Dru and Kal uncover a secret government plot to control and track Australia's students in this tween series. A degree of distrust for authority is to be encouraged, right? (Trailer / Thursday, Oct. 17)
