This Goldie Hawn vehicle, Michael Ritchie's fourth sports film (DOWNHILL RACER; SEMI-TOUGH; and THE BAD NEWS BEARS preceded), offers few surprises, but does feature some nice moments from the ever-plucky comedienne. After being denied the head football coach's job at Prescott High--a nice school in a nice neighborhood where she is the girls track coach--Molly McGrath (Hawn) accepts a position as the grid coach at inner-city Central High. Predictably, the tough kids refuse to take Molly seriously and make life miserable for her, but in time she earns their respect; and, respecting themselves for the first time, the Wildcats begin winning. Problems arise on the home front, however, when Molly's ex-husband (James Keach) claims that her devotion to her coaching duties has made her an unfit mother. Silly but not always funny, WILDCATS relies too much on Hawn's familiar screen persona, getting little mileage from the actress' "serious" moments, yet it manages to provide more than a chuckle or two.
