Flipper Reviews

Yikes! Hollywood updates yet another '60s TV icon. Surly teen Elijah Wood, spending the summer in Florida with happy-go-lucky uncle Paul Hogan, gets a chance to bond with an animatronic dolphin while battling corporate despoilers of the environment. After half-hearted attempts to keep things plausible, FLIPPER soon succumbs to the Lassie Syndrome ("Treeeep! Treeeep!" "What's that, Flipper? You've found the toxic-waste barrels?"). Even on a purely sentimental level, FREE WILLY this ain't: The product placements are the most promiscuous in recent memory -- perhaps in history -- and all but the smallest children will sense the cynicism underlying this superficially noble shaggy fish story.
