Conclusion. Ellen takes the blame for Mannion's murder and faces trial; martial law is proclaimed after officers declare Bligh a tyrant and place him under arrest; Johnny and Emily stay together as husband and wife and eventually have a daughter they name Ellen.
Part 3 of four. Unrest among the convicts increases; Mark resigns his post and meets up with Conor in Sydney; the new governor, Capt. Bligh, arrives and tries to bring order to the colony by dictating an end to the barter in rum; Ellen and Johnny have a brief but tragic reunion.
Part 2 of four. Ellen learns that her son is alive; Mannion's new wife, Conor, is appalled at her husband's treatment of the convicts, and finds adjusting to life on the estate difficult. Meanwhile, a power struggle in the colony develops when Gov. Hunter is unable to stop the illegal rum trade.
