Eddie is embarrassed by Joy's aggressive singing of “Happy Birthday” at Steph's 25th-birthday party. Later, Joy tells Eddie that she finds his celebrity impressions annoying. Meanwhile, Steph is upset with Jeff's birthday present. It's a watch she wants badly, but she wanted it as a reward for finishing her master's thesis, and she hasn't done that yet. When a 94-year-old neighbor he barely knows dies, Eddie wants no part of the funeral---until Joy decides that she wants to be neighborly. Eddie then decides to be more neighborly than Joy, despite the wishes of the dead man's widow (K Callan). Meanwhile, Jeff doesn't like the eulogy that Steph has prepared.
Jeff recruits Eddie for a faculty basketball team, but Eddie has a secret: Despite his height, he's terrible at the sport.This is a problem because Eddie lied to Joy about his supposed prowess while they were dating, and he has never told her the truth. Neil: John Cho.
Steph decides that she wants to watch an adult video with Jeff, who has never seen one, so he asks his colleagues at school for advice. That's how Eddie gets into trouble with Joy, who is in no mood for nonsense following a disastrous visit to the gym.
Jeff turns Joy on to tennis, and Steph turns Eddie on to yoga. (And both Steph and Eddie are flea-market fans as well.) This leads to Jeff-Joy and Steph-Eddie “dates,” which in turn lead to marital complications.
Eddie and Joy install lamps on each side of their bed: His works, but hers doesn't, and he won't do anything about it. Meanwhile, Jeff chafes because Steph expects him to go to bed at the same time she does.
Eddie plays bad cop when daughter Allison wants to share her bedroom with her slacker boyfriend, Doug (Timm Sharp). Meanwhile, Eddie has been suspended by acting principal Jeff, who ends up hiring Doug as a substitute teacher for Eddie's class.
Guilt-tripped by Jeff and Steph, Eddie volunteers for a Big Brother program. But things don't go as planned when he is mistakenly given an adult (J.B. Smoove) to mentor. Meanwhile, Joy decides to go into the jewelry business.
When Kenny (J.B. Smoove) is subjected to what he says is a racial slight at a brand-new movie theater, Eddie rushes to his defense, even though he's not certain that the slight was racial in nature. Now he can't go back to the theater, and Joy wants to go there.
After a pregnancy scare, Joy decides that Eddie should have a vasectomy. Meanwhile, Jeff catches a ball at a ball game and Eddie demands that he give it to the "disadvantaged" Kenny (J.B. Smoove). Dr. Park: Ken Jeong.
Eddie and Joy go to a couple's seminar so Eddie can get in touch with his feelings, and Kenny (J.B. Smoove) also offers Eddie assistance. Meanwhile, Steph and Jeff deal with their own sensitivity issues. Dr. Friedman: Wendie Malick.
Second-season finale: Kenny (J.B. Smoove) teaches Eddie to swim (or tries to), so Eddie can take Joy snorkeling in Hawaii. She has always wanted to do it, but Eddie has nixed it because he can't swim. Eddie is also trying to one-up Joy: It seems that she gave him a watch after they had both promised not to celebrate their anniversary.
