The Mark Twain Prize

First Aired: February 28, 2001

“Dick Van Dyke Show” creator, writer and occasional cast member Carl Reiner becomes an “official national treasure” (says Van Dyke) as he receives the third annual Mark Twain Prize in a gala taped Oct. 24, 2000. Van Dyke introduces the proceedings, which feature copious TV and movie clips, and warm words from Joy Behar, Richard Belzer, Steve Martin, Mary Tyler Moore, Reiner's son Rob, comic George Wallace and Jerry Seinfeld, who opens the show by setting the praise bar quite high. “I think,” Seinfeld opines, “that Carl Reiner is funnier than Mark Twain.”
