Wildly inventive, often absurdist sketches and blackouts, written by and starring a TV pioneer. Kovacs had many shows (seven in Philadelphia between 1950 and '52, the last two of which aired nationally), and by the time he moved to New York in '52 he was a critics' darling for such over-the-top characters as poet Percy Dovetonsils and deejay Wolfgang von Sauerbrauten. Kovacs influenced a generation of comedians, but his own shows were never ratings hits. He died in an auto accident in 1962.
