This portrait of "the portraitist of his time" (1856-1925) canvasses a career that encompassed some 800 portraits. Jacqueline Bisset narrates the program, produced in conjunction with a 1999 retrospective at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. It includes not only portraits but Sargent's striking landscapes, and even a depiction of wounded WWI soldiers. Sargent, an American who lived mostly in London, was "an artistic nomad," says Bisset, "constantly painting what caught his eye."
