The Writers Guild of America Awards — a good predictor of who'll wind up among Oscar's nominated writers — were announced today. Unfortunately, the WGA has declared that Oscar shoo-ins In the Bedroom (written by Todd Field and Rob Festinger) and Memento (written by Christopher Nolan) are ineligible for the guild's screenplay honors due to a technicality. The screenwriters were apparently not WGA members at the time those movies were made. WGA original screenplay nods did go to Gosford Park, The Man Who Wasn't There, Monster's Ball, Moulin Rouge and The Royal Tenenbaums. Nominations for screenplays based on previously published material went to A Beautiful Mind, Black Hawk Down, Bridget Jones's Diary, Ghost World and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.
