The Walking Dead has never been shy about slicing and dicing people — whether living or nah — but there's something especially unsettling about the idea of the Whisperers.
It's not just their hyper-violence and abnegation of most societal norms or even the silent and slithery way they sneak up on people (that last bit just earns them a rad nickname). It's the fact that these people, if you can even call them that anymore, spend all their time coated in walker skins because they want to.
It was one thing when Rick and the Alexandrians decided to slather themselves in zed blood to escape an invasion, but these folks bemask themselves in rotted corpse sheets just for the heck of it. Because it's their thing. Who does that? More like, what does that?
Anyway, we all know that the Whisperers are making their way onto the show sooner rather than later, but until now, we've been leaning on key art and brief (albeit hella creepy) character teasers to picture what they might look like in action once they join the fold.
A new teaser from IGN, though, gives us a better glimpse at what's ahead, as a half-dozen Whisperers are shown prowling around Alexandria, watching our heroes wandering around unawares. They're eventually stopped by their Alpha (Samantha Morton), who's flanked by Beta (Ryan Hurst), and she says to them — in a whisper, duh — "They do not belong here."
After the pack draws their weapons in readiness to take fighting orders from their leader, she then lifts a finger up to her fetted flesh-covered face to tell them to "shhh." If the sight of that skin hugging her eyes and nose and lips isn't enough to creep you right on out, you've got thicker — and possibly zombified — skin than us.
The Walking Dead Season 9 returns Sunday, Feb. 10 at 9/8c on AMC.
